Re: An ERE dating site

I have largely felt the same way as Crusader for most of my life, starting as an ardent materialist atheist, then sliding into intellectual agnosticism in my early 20s, then fervent agnosticism in my late 20s after reading Becker's The Denial of Death and Kant's Critique of Pure Reason. But I still ...

@fiby41 -- Don't marry anyone who isn't worth at least half of your net worth to you (as in you'd give 1/2 of your net worth right then for the privilege of marrying them). Then work your ass off to make it a success.
This is a helpful framing, thank you.

Re: Jordan Peterson

I agree, at the micro, person-to-person level he seems enjoyable and like he'd be a solid adviser. As a theorist, his idiosyncrasies (gender, "cultural marxism", lobsters, Disney, weird epistemology) make him extremely hard to take seriously.

Re: Civilized to Death: The Price of Progress by Christopher Ryan

His podcast is fun. My basic issue is that it doesn't matter which society is better to live in; we don't live in the society we do because it's best, but rather it's the one that survived. If I have an idealic hunter gather tribe, but someone else creates "civilization", and they decide t...

Re: Can ERE Be Useful to Low Income Individuals?

Yeah this would be ideal for me. The next step up from my position is termed an "L3"Process Assistant and they get a $2.15 an hour raise. I'm a bit of an introvert and this position involves a lot of managing and public speaking, and I don't feel like those are my strong suits I used to s...

Stahlmann, this article does a good job at explaining most of what is true from the "manosphere" without the negativity usually associated: https://web.archive.org/web/20200425125954/https://slatestarcodex.com/2014/08/31/radicalizing-the-romanceless/ [The author seems to have deleted it s...

If you want to do anything complex in a browser you'll need to know JavaScript. JavaScript can also be used server side as Node. It has its quirks but it's multiparadigmatic and popular. So in the absence of a compelling reason to use something else, that's what I'd go for. But I'm mostly a JavaScri...

Re: What are you doing during the confinement ?

Tried to ride my bike yesterday and found the rear wheel was going crooked after a few minutes of riding. Was resigning myself to dropping a pretty penny on a new surly to replace my 80s schwinn sport. Then watched some videos and determined I just needed to tighten my quick release skewer a lot mor...

Re: COVID-19

It's interesting that the US advised to wear them on the same day the UK re-confirmed not to wear them justifying this with a lack of evidence that they actually work. I was under the impression that the standard masks only stop bigger droplets and since COVID spreads via aerosols and stays in the ...

Re: Derp und Drang: The_Bowme Journal

Now that I've wrapped up at Lambda School, and will be moving to Chicago and starting a dev job, I figured it was time to take a look at my financial situation. Actually it turned out to not be such a decrease in the net worth as I thought! That was due to a mix of having income from the school as a...

Re: Housing in Spain, Santiago de Compostela

Hmm, seems reasonable overall. I think I spent around $800 euro/mo living in a shared apartment in Madrid. How are you handling heat in the winter. Is that factored into electricity? Also what about internet? I will be visiting Santiago de Compostela for a friend's wedding in late June, excited to b...

Hey, I'm 31 and just switched into coding after 6 years as a loan officer. Got my first gig and moving to Chicago for it. Cool to see that the field has been lucrative for you even if it's not always the most exciting! I owned a condo before and found that the condo association was running its finan...

Re: ERE housing approaches in Chicago?

This is all really good feedback, thanks so much all! I talked to my friend, and he just moved into a condo in Edgewater, but has an empty apartment in Uptown until June he's paying rent on. I'm thinking of subleasing it through the remainder of the term ($1300/mo). This works well because north red...

Re: ERE housing approaches in Chicago?

Thanks, I'll look up that prior thread!

Housing I just meant a place to live, I would be shooting for an apartment.

A rock bar is a bar that hosts bands with distorted guitar music :)

I probably will avoid the suburbs for now as I would like to get a feel for the city proper to start.

Re: ERE housing approaches in Chicago?

Great advice. My friend has an empty apartment under lease for two months since he bought a condo recently. I might see if I can pay him to stay in it for a month so I can figure out housing on the ground. $1300 a month is what he's paying for it but might be worth avoiding trying to choose a place ...

ERE housing approaches in Chicago?

I'm moving to Chicago next month! I'm excited for the pizza! And maybe a Shellac show? I'm going to be working out of a wework downtown, at 515 N State, closest transit stops are Red Line (1 block away) and Brown & Purple Line (5 blocks away). There is also bike lockers I believe. I like taking ...
