Re: Jacob's other journal

A small update regarding cold hand syndrome. My partner bought us a pair of 'therapy gloves'. The gloves supposedly help against arthritis, but they also work really well in keeping your hands warm! They bought them on Wish (click here for a better view), but I'm sure they can also be found on Amazo...

Re: ERE Investment Curriculum

@J+G, sorry man, I found it quite hard to keep up. I actually read by myself up until Ch 18 or so. But since I didn't really *study* the material, I couldn't retain it. Currently, I'm trying to build a 'read textbook non-fiction consistently' habit, and in accordance with the stuff I read in Atomic ...

Re: Portfolio evaluation and correcting for the wealth effect

Cool! It could also be used for determining asset allocation*. I was just thinking last week about how one could alter the permanent portfolio by including *some* (possibly wrong) knowledge about 'overvaluedness'. E.g. at a say a P/E of 100/1000/10000, I'm not sure if you'd want 25% in stocks. Jacob...

Re: Crispy Road to FI in Germany

Welcome Schnitzel! Are your income/expenses just your part or is it combined with your spouse? And if you want to combine buying cheap real estate and move to the Netherlands, you might be in for a big surprise... Though Rube (also a forum member here) is still buying rental properties here, if I'm ...

Re: Are tattoos stupid?

Why do you want a tattoo? What kind of tattoo do you want? Have you, in the past, made impactful decisions that weren't easy to reverse that you have regretted? If so, was is simply a bet gone wrong , or did you actually make an error in your analysis? What is the worst that could happen? What would...

Re: Jacob's other journal

My ghetto solution is just to put on multiple layer of sweaters until I stay warm. :P I haven't figured out a solution yet wrt how to retain warm hands though... Especially when working on a laptop, my hands get very cold.

Advent of Code

There is a 25 day long online programming competition called Advent of Code. Every day a new puzzle (consisting of two parts) is released and people from all over the globe try to solve the puzzles as fast as they can. I'm having a blast doing it, and since I believe there are a couple of programmer...

Re: McConnell Economics, Chapter 1

(I started working on a summary here , anyone can edit! It's not complete, so feel free to edit/add things) This chapter was intended to just set the stage, but it was already quite interesting. Consider very first couple of sentences: Biologically, humans need only air, water food, clothing and she...

[ERE Curricullum] Economics (McConnell & Brue) Overview Thread

Hi all! I thought it would be useful to have an overview thread for each book we're working through, so here it is. In due time, I can update it with links to the relevant discussion threads/summaries etcetera. Economics (McConnell & Brue, 15th edition) 1 Introduction to Economics and the Economy Ch...

Re: How to learn effectively from a textbook?

Good question! I recall one of the first lectures I ever had, in which the lecturer talked about the Forgetting Curve . Basically, we were taught around 200% of the stuff they expected us to remember over a year, because the half time of the knowledge was say a year. After a year, we would still rem...

Reep! Welcome back girl! I know you had a rough, rough, rough time, but I'm very happy to hear that you've largely landed on your feet by now. In order not to flood your journal with questions immediately, I'll ask just a couple: - what have you been writing? - what are you studying? - how is RV liv...

Exactly! This blends in quite nicely with the "money is a solved problem" thread. And even if he's just doing it for the attention, I'm sure the people he has helped don't mind. Action speaks louder than words. In this case, he is doing both.

Re: On the crossroads – should I accept a promotion, ask for more money or quit and do semi-ERE?

I would ( try to) a larger raise and a shorter notice period. Depending on the company/manager, you could also try to meet in the middle, i.e. 15% raise now, 10% raise in six months if you are doing good work. The second raise should be seperate from the normal raise cycle. If you can pull something...
