Re: 3 yrs to FI: ertyu's journal

You've built a lot of resentment towards your parents. It's clear that you need a change of setting or this will very likely worsen. If it's lcol, you could just go look at rooms available. No commitment needed but looking at some rooms every week is the first step. The countries I mentioned are mor...

Re: 3 yrs to FI: ertyu's journal

That sounds tough. Stressful but familiar. You were successful at working a professional job. You got certified, experienced, and followed through the application process. You got laid off in a difficult recession with a decent package. I wouldn't call that a failure but a difficulty in life. There ...

Re: COVID19 and boycotting Chinese made

Most Chinese I meet actually feel it's the ccp trying everything they can to stifle them, even while abroad. When I said they don't identify with their government, I thought it was blatant that they openly criticize and talk sh*t about their government. You've never heard of the great Thai song, &qu...

Re: COVID19 and boycotting Chinese made

Or did I misunderstand Jean and Jean meant that we are all one people, we are all humans together, on a journey and that countries are just part of our shared fiction?

Re: COVID19 and boycotting Chinese made

When I say China, I mean the government, only the CCP and absolutely not the people. Hong Kongers seem to agree that they are not their government. It is a political perspective that arises in any people who feel their government does not represent their interests. I've met tons of Vietnamese, Thais...

Re: COVID19 and boycotting Chinese made

Some similarities? I was told I look like a Thai with a big nose in Thailand. I have friends who are Latin but look very East Asian. More than a little. A Japanese Peruvian for president in Peru, I never knew. I also read that Native Americans were a unique mix of different Asian groups cross the Be...

Re: 3 yrs to FI: ertyu's journal

Weasel coffee is cheap at Big C, 3-5usd for a bag the size of a decent pineapple. A warning though. Coffee f***ed me up in Vietnam. It is potent and delicious. I couldn't handle it. I'd be laying in bed with a headache near paralyzed from drinking 2 or 3 cups at home. As you can see from the links b...

Re: 3 yrs to FI: ertyu's journal

2Birds1Stone has a good idea. $10/hr 100 hours a month is $1000. 500+1000=1500 total. Live between Vietnam and Thailand for a while. 2-3 month visas or quite easy to get so you book a monthly stay somewhere for <200 total per month, get a one way plane and visa for <100/month average (use bestonward...

Re: COVID19 and boycotting Chinese made

There was a lot of propaganda on this but travelling with an Asian woman has shown me absolutely 0 racism. None of my Asian friends reported it and the beauty is that in SF, a group of veterans gathered to patrol for racism but found none. Meanwhile, in prc, Africans are getting forcibly evicted fro...

Re: Inheritance coming - best options?

Paying off debt is a great start, I applaud that action. 300+/month of utilities? That's huge for me. That could be all your expenses if you were hardcore. I spent 12-20k/yr for the last several years. This is for 2 people and includes a lot of travel, eating out, massages, and eating pretty much ev...

Re: Investments Trade Log

My experiment is far more volatile than the vanilla index fund. This is expected from Siegel's paper but interesting to experience. I'm up 3% relative to the index now. The reverse was true last week. Got surprised by my cost basis changing for Abbvie upon a merger with AGN. Debating on whether to d...

Re: Inheritance coming - best options?

https://www.bogleheads.org/wiki/Managing_a_windfall The above link has probably better advice but you could dump it into indexes or Wellesley and Wellington and likely live off 3% for life. Your expenses are high. This is 10 years of expenses at your current burn rate. If you can comfortably cut you...

Re: My MacBook Air is being weird - solutions?

Wow. I'd do a hard reset.

From here on, do all your internet activities within a sandbox, assuming your ram can handle it.

Your documents may be compromised. If you have a copy elsewhere stored before this happened, use that copy rather than the ones on your PC.

Re: COVID19 and boycotting Chinese made

@slowtraveller is Aspire the same as Acer or is that a separate company and Acer has a product range with same name? I had a typo, I fixed it. You're right though, Aspire makes Acer. And I don't know how I thought Oppo was Korean. I'd heard that while in Thailand but upon further research, I was ve...

Re: Slowtravelling South America

Thanks Bigato, so mainly stay away from Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. I love the less touristy areas more as people tend to be friendlier and the nature is still gorgeous, as demonstrated in your journal. Alphaville, you are like an encyclopedia on Latin America. I gotta watch some documentaries to ...

Re: COVID19 and boycotting Chinese made

Back to the originalbtopic-I found the answer to my question: Asus and Acer are Taiwanese brands and have some quality products. For phones, Samsung seems the best. I previously wrote Oppo as well but upon further research, it is also manufactured in China. @whitebelt There is no forced organ harves...

Re: Washers vs Wipers - where do you stand?

Asia converted me here.

Living in Latin America now, I got a basic plastic water bottle, cut a hole in the center of the top of the lid and squeeze the bottle to clean myself. Going 2 months strong now. These plastic bottles are more resilient than I thought.

Reading these last few pages of your journal and seeing all those pictures inspired me. Your life there seems amazing. It's a wise choice to be there at this time. Lots of work customizing the space to keep you active and healthy. Wild tucans flying in the sky. Cute dogs and cows prancing about in t...

@Alphaville The seasonality pointers are really helpful. I didn't know that. Thank you. Do you have any other wisdom regarding the Amazon? I am also always up to hear how to better protect myself against kidnapping. I wear old clothes typically, have a barely working phone that is very cracked, don'...
