Re: Guns in America

During the 1992 race riots, police did not defend many businesses from looting. Business owners had to take up arms to defend themselves from having their businesses pillaged. If it were not for guns deterring the criminal actions of looters, they would have suffered large losses to their livelihood.

Re: Guns in America

I am not partisan at all. Lived in California many years and very pro drugs, abortion, all that stuff so not partisan. There was one stopped in Texas last year, feel free to do a deep inquiry if you want but I've heard many stories. Haven't cared enough to look up statistics. But guns are easy to ge...

Re: Guns in America

I've heard Texas has more guns than most countries, by a long shot. The mass shootings are often instates with stronger gun laws. When people try to do a mass shooting, people with guns stop them, unless everyone is scared of guns and then they have to wait for police rather than defending themselve...

Re: Fasting Can Regenerate Your Immune System

Fasts are amazing. I do 2 a week for 24 hours when I want to lose weight and it's the only diet I can stick to. Eat everything I want rest of the time. Biggest challenge is breaking the fast with a small meal rather than binging. Binges make me tired and feel sick. Small meals make me feel good afte...

Walk around the area you want to stay and contact every for rent sign you see to see if they are open to weekly or monthly rentals. Compare Uber to taxis to walking to renting a bike or motorcycle, often one will be clearly cheaper and more convenient. Get a room with a kitchen if you can. I haven't...

@JP What portfolio simulator would you recommend for a fairly complex but and hold portfolio? I want to try 5 portfolios- 1) Half Wellesley half Wellington 2) A third Wellesley, a third s&p500 (buy each component in equal weight and make no subsequent changes, reinvest all dividends directly back in...

I'm up for it. I got WhatsApp, I might need a brief tutorial on IRC channels.

I'd really love to get my expenses down to 500-1000/month and this seems like a great way to move towards that.

Re: Thoughts about respectability

Back in my college days, I'd bring these deli grade sandwiches from home that earned some status. If you got something homemade that's high quality, people won't rag on you much. They'll instead be curious. If it's obviously a diy hack, people will often rag on you for being cheap. But if it's bette...

Re: Location vs Money

For the calculation, don't forget to include the FEIE which makes your taxable income effectively 0 except for FICA taxes. So backdoor Roth IRA may still be possible but not direct Roth. And also look at state taxes.

And Asia may also have its own taxes.

Seriously. I loved your journal.

Being 25 and having just started my travel journey (first in Chiang Mai, now Issan, and off to Bangkok next week), I feel like a young grasshopper finding wisdom. A very spendy, wasteful grasshopper who aspires to spend what you do.

Being Paid to Wait

As I research the price of heading to Bangkok from Issan, I run into a snag. A ticket that is $27 keeps failing payment. Other tickets run from $50-100. Damn. It's an hour flight and the $27 ticket is the only one the included free check in baggage. I'm feeling some frustration. After 5 attempts to ...

Re: Sustainable living but no homesteading?

The skill and capacity to do it are most important.

I read a book called Green City that changed my mind on this. Cities are far more carbon and resource friendly than rural areas due to economy of scale, walkability, and things like that.

Bathroom Failures

Since my time in Thailand, I have on 2 occasions gone diy when it hasn't helped. Both times, related to bathrooms. Once, I was cooked food and she poured rice down her bathroom sink. It clogged. I tried a plunger (190 baht), baking soda (25 baht), and vinegar (25 baht). Uber drive both ways(60 baht)...

I have one and unless I met xyz balance, I have fees. If I invest, fees. If I use abroad, fees. Investment options are restrictive. I research rollover options and... Every single choice has both more fees and more restrictive investment options than a taxable account. With a small sum, this only ma...

@ Jacob & Riggerjack I agree with both of you. Thank you for the educating discourse. I love nature but at some point, I surrendered on trying to save nature. I don't litter but I eat lots of meat and take long flights to access places quicker, both are arguably worse from a carbon stand point but I...

Don't we all do this when we employ someone to build a pooled mutual fund of any sort?

I currently pay the Wellington Management company around 22-45 basis points* depending on the holding. I've been happy so far with the results.
