Re: Smokers here? (Barbecue, not tobacco)

ffj, the south tends to feed you like a mama who thinks you're lookin' a little skinny. It ruins you, if not physically, then in your expectations. Now thatI'm in CA, I've been deeply offended by some of the portions that have been plopped in front me. Authentic Mexican restaurants in the bad neighb...

Re: Smokers here? (Barbecue, not tobacco)

@ffj My wife was watching the show and as a native Louisianian who loves traditional cajun cooking, I got miffed at the show as well. Not everyone appreciates turning traditional food into an expensive gourmet fusion. I happen to appreciate the very simple, well-executed prairie cajun food that poor...

Re: Incompatibility between drinking and ERE

Sharing your delicious homebrews with people might make them inclined to offer up their own time, skills, and resources to you when you need them. There are, of course, other ways to show generosity and build relationships, but if this is the one that appeals to you the most, is it really such a dis...

Re: I hate birthdays

I do what Jacob does, and tell people mine is February 30th. About 50% of people believe me at least for a little while. The reason I hate them is it's the worst kind of participation trophy. People celebrate themselves just for being alive. Except with participation trophies in tee-ball, at least t...

Re: Need Advice: Producing Miniatures for Board Game

Wow, lots of gret ideas. Thanks gang. I'm going to explore both the mold idea and the making someone else do it. The mold might have a hard time with the small holes. Do you think it would be easy to make the ship sans holes, then drill into the final product? My holes look pretty rough inside.

Need Advice: Producing Miniatures for Board Game

I'll spare you most of the backstory, but after being subejcted to enough game nights by DW and her friends I decided their games sucked and I made my own. Only thing I still need are the miniature pieces, which you can usually just buy in bulk on the internet, but there is nothing ready-made that w...

Moving soon to an area that would be S&R prime real estate, so I'll look into it--even though they probably do it so much that they take care of it in-house with pros.

Re: Meditation and Metacognition

I've realized there are three types of people, with regards to meditation. 1) those who don't meditate 2) those who do meditate 3) those who make sure you know they meditate Like most things other than eating, sleeping, and sh***ing, it probably isn't for everybody. I completely respect anyone who f...

Super cool stuff! I wish there was somewhere to sign up to learn how to do this, short of being a fireman, even as a volunteer. I'd be all over that.

Re: SWB's path to a not so extreme ER

Awesome work! For what it's worth, my fiancee also stalled in her keto. She was cutting weight for a fight, and lost a lot initially, then nothing for a few weeks. She finally decided to cut out dairy and peanut butter, and the rest melted off too fast. She missed weight by three pounds--too far UND...

Re: Bitcoin on the rise

Coinbase or Kraken are major exhpchanges for Americans. Not sure what country you're buying from. Like GandK said, don't invest more than you can afford to go busto with. In addition to the ETF launch and hard fork updates which may drive the price, I think on the off chance that one of the major gl...

Re: It is worth commuting further for cheaper rent?

The bathroom thing was a joke, maybe not a good one. But the issue with commuting is that it reduces your fun time, which to me is independent of what your hourly rate is. If it reduces time at work, then hourly rate is what you would consider. If you have no opportunity to be paid during your commu...

Re: It is worth commuting further for cheaper rent?

I have never understood MMM's fascination with considering your hourly rate during hours you have no prospect of actually earning that rate. If the commute only allowed you to work 7 hours versus 8, I get it. But if you have no opportunity to get paid for your time, why does it matter how much you m...

Yes, fundamentals as opposed to time period, or in other words, things that can be used for more practical purposes without computer aid.

The khan academy site looks promising. Thanks for all the suggestions.

Renaissance Math Curriculum

I'm curious as to what areas of math a Renaissance mathematician would have been skilled in. Bonus points if you happen to know which actual texts they would have studied, or what modern curriculums would bring me up to that speed. The reason is I never went very far in math, and I'm rusty on what I...

Re: Precious Metals and Offshore Bank Accounts

You could do all of that with bitcoin except for the stable part. Book flights, access anywhere with certain wallet types, and Opendime is a USB that can be handed over like cash. And it's untraceable. Probably easier to use without calling attention to yourself than precious metals. Of course of th...

Re: If you could go back/forward and give your 21, 29, 45, and 77 year old selves a book, then what would it be?

21: ERE 29: Meditations, Marcus Aurelius And here it gets tough, because I am presumably assigning myself a book I read at a younger age. Assuming I didn't read it? Or rereading it? Or a stab in the dark? 45: Collected Fictions, Borges. In Spanish. To make myself become fluent enough to read it in t...

Re: Translation Dictionary of Idioms

I have only seen these specific to one language per book. For example, I have a book of Cajun French idioms translated into English. For aphorisms, Publilius Syrus is great, and I suppose you could get the original Latin, as well as translations into English and other tongues. A ton of modern Englis...

It's closing, but apparently every entry will be published in a 10-volume set. If you're cheap, you have a few weeks to copy and paste a few thousand pages into a word document.
