Re: Canadas Health Care System ?

I live in Canada, and a dual US/Can citizen. Speaking from my own experience and living in Ontario: Healthcare system is great, it's basically free. I can go to the Dr for anything at anytime, or the emergency room no charge. A family member had blood cancer spent 9 months in hospital, full bone mar...

Re: Do you have bonds in your portfolio?

No one can predict where interest rates will go with 100% certainty. Thats while I am sticking with a long term approach of stocks and bond indexes- and sticking to my allocation by rebalancing annually. If the bond etf drops in price, it also means yields are going up, by rebalancing, I am buying o...

Re: Do you have bonds in your portfolio?

I am about to ER and recently added more bonds in my portfolio via an aggregate bond etf. With that I am now at 60/40 allocation.

Re: Help me find out what makes me unemployable, please.

Lost cause with 8 years out of school. Retrain in something else, work you ass off in school, get great grades AND work at the same time even if its pouring coffee. Volunteer for committees while at school - all to show on your resume.

Re: How to retire early in Canada with an RRSP

Why not use a couch potato index strategy?

When you withdraw from a RRSP/RRIF it is taxed as income. If you are living on a low enough amount, you can get away with paying very little tax.

Re: Burnt out, laid off Dad

Sounds like you are in a very nice position, OrganicRain. I like the way you put it, that you may have PTSD from prior work. I'm beginning to feel that's going to be me if I don't watch it. Anyway, I think it's great that you are rethinking going back into the same old thing of high stress jobs, et...

Re: Burnout

There is no doubt I am suffering from burnout. I worked straight commission for 10 years - number one sales rep in the country out of 400 reps for 8 of those years. Made lots of money - got tired. Went into sales management and led a team to be the best in the nation. I finally got laid off July2015...

Thanks for the tip...

About $2800 month - that is a fairly liberal number including car depreciation $150/month, home improvement $100/month and misc of $250/month.

However, things like weddings for my kids etc are not included. We have 3 daughters.

Burnt out, laid off Dad

Hi all, A bit about me. I am 42 and DW is 44. We have 3 kids 8,10, and 12. Live in Ontario Canada (hour drive from Toronto) I have had a bit of an unorthodox life. Had an unstable childhood (grew up in poverty, moved a lot and no dad at home) Moved out at 16. After trying lots of different types of ...

Re: Laid off with 3 kids. Retire?

Another factor not sure mentioned is the intangible benefit to the children in the picture of having their father in their lives day to day, and not away earning the daily bread. You would be present in their lives in these years of their growth. If you could make the $ numbers work, your presence ...

Re: Laid off with 3 kids. Retire?

I should add - I can actually access all of my retirement funds at any time. Income situation is as follows: Monthly: Employment Insurance $2000 for 9 more months Wifes PT job: $500- $1100/month Gov kids subsidy: $400/month (this goes up to $1000month starting next year if our income is low enough (...

Re: Laid off with 3 kids. Retire?

Hi all, Its been a while well, I decided to take another job - but I had to quit due to the enormity of the hours etc. Was not a goof fit at all. My Dr signed a medical certificate to I was able to get some EI coming back in. So - wonder what I should do now? Wondering if this is a sign that I shoul...

Read livingafi recent blog entry-his 3 months summary of his emotions etc since he quit his job. One of the most honest and detailed summation of the immediate aftermath experience I've ever read.
