Re: Low Income, Early 20s, Anti-Wage-Slave Living: Walwen's Journal
When placed in high stress environments, these people tend to become the "sick call commandos" or "sad pandas". ... When I cross paths with a Marine they will say "Rah, sir". And do you know what the appropriate response to that is? "Kill!" Can broadly confir...

Re: Egg's journal
The silver lining is that with accepting the offer, you have hit one of your goals from several pages back of earning over £100k per annum. I might be misremembering it, or maybe the goal has changed - but if was still in place, then congrats! Yeah, it's definitely been an ambition of mine. I think...

Re: Egg's journal
I think there is value in those days where one works long and hard and effective. ... I know there are days when… i don’t exactly give my full effort for a variety of reasons. Well, I find the “extra hardcore” days are what I owe to compensate. Yes true, this is me too. I find achieving flow state ...

Re: guitar player's journal
Having done data engineering for about 5 years, my opinion is that it's thoroghly meh - because you're expected to cobble together a data pipelne out of a ton of different small tools, services and programs/scripts. There's no type-checking or almost any other kind of guarantees between the steps i...

Re: Egg's journal
I did take the job that I was talking about. I always thought when people in the public sector said our engineering culture was just as good as most private sector companies it was a cope, but seeing things from the inside of what is a fairly well known tech company, I have to say that the culture, ...

Re: AE's Journal Round 6 - Navigating the Liminal Space
I've also discovered a lot of the reasons I got into ERE were because I was in a bad mental state and it seemed like magical solution to my work problems. I could have written these words myself. I don't know the solution, as I am currently depressed myself and having regular psychodynamic therapy....

Re: Ether's Journal
Ah, Reddit. I don't agree with all of your advice on that post but I also am both (a bit) older and (a lot) less wealthy so at the end of the day you're onto something. The overemployment does seem to have worked out especially well for you, as does the real estate investment. Overemployment is not ...

Re: Ether's Journal
Love to see this. I never saw your initial post in 2014 (around when I joined the forum) but if I had read it, I would have thought your goals were optimistic. You've then completely smashed it all out of the park, even relative to aggressive goals. Pretty amazing stuff 💪 All the more because your o...

Re: Work environments in software development
Yes, I think purpose there being feedback would make sense in the modernist framework while my colleagues comes from a more post modern stance. I am okay with either. I've worked in 3 software development roles so far and in every case it's been about feedback, and we've regularly made changes base...

Re: Egg's journal
Incidentally, I just read Jacob's comment that FI usually happens after around 500 posts. My journal is now at around 140. Very unmathematically, that 28% sounds about right for my FIRE progress.

Congrats on the job offer! Well worth it I reckon, as you said, YOLO! As an advocate for team U.K (altho Poland does sound awesome as well), the life premium that can be gained moving further north can be massive, and with goodish train and flight links you are never too far from London if a day in...

Re: Freedom through Frugality: Sabaka's Journal
Hey Sabaka. Probably quite belated in terms of how it feels in your life but: - Sorry to hear you felt you had to drop from the Army. I left the RN after a fairly short stint too (about 5 years in my case) but, like you, not in the way I would have chosen. You may wish to consider joining the Int Co...

Re: Egg's journal
To be considered as a potential extra benefit of making the change: If you ever get laid off due to bad economy/etc, it’s going to be easier to find another job at current salary because you’ll be seen as “more attractive” as you’re coming from higher money and a prestigious company. That's likely ...

Life continues relatively uneventfully for now, which I think is to be appreciated. Relevantly to the conversation last time I swung round these parts, I just got offered a job which would increase my compensation significantly (hard to say exactly how much because it involves performance related bo...

Re: Egg's journal
. Permanent work (as opposed to contracts) in both Poland and UK is for people who prefer far less money for slighly more stability and more relaxed work. Yeah, that's a reasonable comment. Also in the permanent worker category: anyone who's not really a senior yet (I've had the job title, but real...

Thanks for some really interesting contributions @guitarplayer and @zbigi. I defer to your knowledge of the Polish market @zbigi. 600 EUR per day sounds good for sure. I was mostly comparing salaried positions where anything I've read (mostly have to sign up to download a report, or get a quick temp...

Not at all. All suggestions welcome Whilst you're right that we'd probably already have moved if my currrent role allowed work from anywhere, it's definitely a possible path next time I change jobs.

Could your job be done remote? Thanks, Seppia. To answer your question, for sure yes. Software development exists everywhere, and my job is already almost entirely remote (but only allowed to work from within UK in this particular role for security and tax reasons). As an EU/UK dual national (wife ...

Re: Egg's journal
I still think about money quite a lot, which is maybe odd considering our spending patterns have drifted inexorably towards the mainstream. I probably already moaned about this somewhere in the journal, but nursery school in the UK is about £14,000 per year for 2 children part time (25 hours per wee...
