Glasgow resident here feel free to ask questions and I'll do my best to answer.
The rental market is as horrible here as it is in any other major city, properties snapped up in hours/sight unseen, toerag landlords etc.

Re: Ydobon's Independence Referendum
Time for an update :) 75%? of home renovations complete, we have stopped using credit to pay for work, which has greatly reduced my stress levels as we are paying as we go. This slows down the pace of work, which is allowing me to spend more time with my wife and daughter (who is now a confident tod...

I love the massive resellers on Amazon who are using bots to control the price of their inventories, some of the bargains that can be had are ridiculous if you're patient. As a method of delaying/preventing consumption I use Camel Camel Camel to alert me when a book/CD hits its lowest price ever (us...

Re: Toilet paper and safety razors
Recently spent £43/$53.99 for 200 fancy razor blades, expecting to get 14 years of shaving from them. I haven't told my wife, but plan to RE by the time they're finished. good countdown :) what type of blade does Ydobon prefer? Very delayed response, I am using Feather blades. After trying 4-5 diff...

Resurrected after 6 months? That's practically new for this forum! :D Recently spent £43/$53.99 for 200 fancy razor blades, expecting to get 14 years of shaving from them. I haven't told my wife, but plan to RE by the time they're finished. Also a Merkur fan, although I would consider swapping out m...

Thanks very much for the link, despite the caveats, I found the diagram in the February report to be very helpful.cmonkey wrote:I usually read the Fidelity monthly updates.

Re: Soft drink consumption
Yes, nearly every day, usually diet drinks such as generic cola or Irn Bru (this is mostly a Scottish thing, although Vexed or some of the well travelled ERErs will be familiar with it). In general I'd say my diet is crap, because I can't control the quantities that I eat, sometimes I think I have a...

Re: Unexpected expenses every year
A lot of lucky kids! I didn't get my first shitty desktop until I was 15, I spent my own savings to buy it and my parents never provided me with a computer or mobile phone. Nowadays kids need laptops. It's required by the school. These are public schools as well - i.e. government funded. We help gi...

Re: US Real Estate - crash coming?
Similar discussions are taking place in the UK. Bits of the property market are probably in bubble territory (London), others are merely perennially popular (Edinburgh (financial hub), posh bits of Glasgow (sub-Edinburgh prices, but very hipster-y)). Others (NE of the country etc.) remain positively...

'Brexit' Must Face a Parliamentary Vote, U.K. Court Rules http://www.nytimes.com/2016/11/04/world/europe/uk-brexit-vote-parliament.html So glad about this. It is good to see the injection of some sanity around this issue from the courts, but the decision is still open to appeal (a date has already ...

Re: What online mag/newspaper subscriptions do ERE-ers have?
I recently discovered that my local council offers free online access to a number of general interest magazines, which was a nice surprise. Nothing too groundbreaking, but I will be taking advantage of the Economist and a couple of IT titles
They offer books as well, but it's mostly crap.

I would be interested in buying BTC with a very small amount of my fun money (basically gambling and a chance to find out more about the technology, which is fascinating).

Re: Are E-readers worth the cost?
I've only ever owned a kindle so that's my only reference. I'm so parsimonious about furniture that I don't have a nightstand or lamp by the bed. If you're as cheap as me, you'll probably appreciate an e-reader with a backlight. Other than that: I have no useful things to say about e-readers. :) We...

Re: Are E-readers worth the cost?
I own a Kindle.
.epub documents can be converted for Kindle.
I don't own a Kindle with a backlight. As far as I'm aware 'paperwhite' refers to the display technology (more pixels), not the light. When I'm in a dark room, it's because I want to sleep
