Re: Socially acceptable greeting from Finland

Greetings from London. I recently FIREd after about 8 years seriously saving, and (alas) 34 years working.
Best wishes for you. I almost worked in Helsinki once, but the swirling vortex of the UK financial services industry, would not let me leave London.

Re: Kipling's Journal

I had a couple of bottles of Chateau Kirwan 2010 the other week. Heavenly. Be careful you don't end up like two of my friends - more wine than they will ever drink. You could sell it I suppose. That becomes a hobby in itself. Luxury experiences must be intermittent to still seem luxurious. I avoid p...

Re: A Romanian's FI Journey

Hello there. Well done, to take your path has required initiative: that is not common. Where did you learn your excellent English? I tried to invest in Romanian Nuclear Power earlier this year (the dividends are good) but could not find a broker that dealt on the Bucharest exchange. Best wishes in y...

Re: Hey guys.. my situation if you want to read. Cheers

The trouble with market timing, is that you have to make a decision to get out of the market, then you have to make a decision to get into it. Both of these are problematic : how do you know when the crash is going to happen? How do you know when the market has hit bottom? For these reasons, "Time i...

Re: Achieving Freedom

Hey there Freedom86 I admire goals and discipline. But, these can become counterproductive when the necessary expectations clash with reality. I found this to be an interesting take on getting where you want to go..https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aHDvEfiSipo . BTW your last manager was incompetent. ...

Re: Noedig's Journal - update on FIRE

Update after 4 months of FIRE: I've no remorse for the decision to quit my work. I had done One More Year to placate my fears, and I am OK with that choice: it's behind me now. My stress levels are way way down. Now when stress arises I usually have time to mentally examine it and turn it over in my...

Re: Noedig's Journal

I gave notice last week. Friday is my last day. Since announcing it, have had nothing but "Why did I wait so long?" in my mind. The stock market is currently tanking, but I am still just above my Number. More importantly, I simply don't give a monkey's. I had thought, that I would carry on working o...

Re: extremely frugal vegan keto, keto, and carnivore diets

Anecdotally, here is my recent experience of doing keto It works, there is no doubt of that. The tough part is sticking to the carb limit, other than that it takes care of itself, with many upsides aside from the weight loss: no sugar crashes, less hunger, less thinking about food. The weekly food s...

Re: Greetings from London

Hi Kipling! Hmm....Is that Kipling as in "Losing theirs and blaming it on you", or as in "Mr Kipling makes exceedingly good cakes"? Also am in London. Reaching FIRE around now. I note there are meetups such as organised by The Escape Artist https://theescapeartist.me/ , but I have as yet not gone to...

Re: Noedig's Journal

It's been 18 months since my last post. Here's what's up: Wife still cancer-free. Gets very tired, looks much older, but she's still in the game and that's what counts. Started a keto diet 55 days back. Lost 11kg so far. Rate has slowed a lot, but still hanging on in there. Trying not to let this go...

@halfmoon, that's kind words indeed. I am mindful of the situation with your DH. For which my kindest thoughts in return.

Woven through your blog posts, your DH strides, epically independent and stubborn and fixing stuff up. Bless you both.

Re: Noedig's Journal

Update: 1. Wife now has all clear, no chemo, no radiotherapy. Tamoxifen for 5 years but that's a detail. Major surprise, especially as she's a doctor herself and expected the full postop gamut. So, major relief that is not so. Is so much counter to former expectation, that it's a bit 'Now what?". No...

Re: The Hard Work Idol

Work expresses our innate capacity to strive.

Capitalist societies harvest that capacity.

Fortunately, the owner of The System has been tracked down, and here in an interview The Man explains what is going on....

Re: FI techniques, for fitness.

you would have to have a daily deficit of over one thousand calories for half a year on to achieve what you set out to. Yup. The app seems happy with that goal, won't allow more. I have done the math, it can be done. I know it is a marathon not a sprint. I have the world's largest duracell battery ...

Re: Tools/Devices/Items/Equipment that helps you to Live Below Your Means

Taking that to mean 'The things I use most, that cost little and add to my quality of life': -Breadmaker (too effective at making delicious bread, having to give that up for a while for my waistline) -Bicycles (secondhand, always have a spare one in case of puncture (every 6 months) or theft (every ...

Re: Buying cheap then freezing

I use the freezer for -storing spoilable ingredients like fish, and when I buy more meat than I will cook that week. -storing the results of bulk cooking sessions. Usually: fish pie, apple pie, lasagne. My wife doesn't really cook. I could hide a body safely in the freezer for years without her seei...

FI techniques, for fitness.

I find it galls me that the discipline I used to get to FI does not seem easily to carry over into losing weight and keeping fit. I mean, some of it does (I like control and I am stoical) But a lot of it doesn’t or is even counterproductive (being an introspective, energy saving, placid guy who enjo...
