Re: Bankai's Journal

Yeah, was mainly looking at west end and south side. We never lived in the north part so weren't really considering it, but it might be worth doing some research. And yeah, the city really improved and I think it will keep improving with the marco tailwinds it has. Which has the flipside of property...

Oxford University study showing that covid itself increases chance of a blod clot much more than vaccines: https://osf.io/a9jdq/ These data show that the incidence of CVT is significantly increased after COVID-19, and greater than that observed with BNT162b2 and RNA-1273 COVID-19 vaccines. The risk ...

Nah, they actually had a million each when they retired and their spending was 30-40k per person. The issues they had, money was not one of them.

Looks like FIREing in low CoL area is the way forward.

Re: moving, there's no requirement to stay there until the place sells. You can move now (once you figure out where you want to move), put the property on market and let agent deal with viewings etc.

If you still have another few months before starting new job, now's the time to conquer diet & exercise. It's both easier to do now when you have time and energy, and will also benefit you by reducing stress from work.

What's the plan for the flat?

Re: Dealing with anger in the face of everyday evil

No point worrying about things you can't control. Doomsayers are as old as humanity and so far their track record is them being right 0% of the time. Here's what you can control - a list of simple steps (which >99% of people in developed world are not willing to do) to move from being part of the pr...

@Jiimmy: Thanks! @wofl: I got lucky because I was in cash last March. However, my wife put half of her NW into FTSE all-share tracker just 2 months before the crash, so timing couldn't be worse! Fortunatelly, she's recovered all losses by now. Great question about investment strategy, I'll come back...

Diablo II was the first game I played when I got my first PC back in 2000/2001. Fantastic game! Have you tried Path of Exile? It's basically Diablo on steroids with much better skill development system and much more content. And it's free to play. -make more regular commitments to maintaining my fri...

Q1 2021 update

1) Health I had issues with my back in Jan/Feb which meant no working out for about a month. I couldn't identify cause of pain but eventually it went away as suddenly as it appeared. I'm back to lifting for almost a month now and getting closer to my max lifts from last year. I'm also eating a lot,...

Nice metabolism. I'm stuffing myself with a surplus of 800 kcal a day for 3 weeks now and weight is not moving at all. Unfair!

I had similar experience with no shampoo experiment. I lasted ~1.5 year but eventually had to go back to using a shampoo for the same reasons as you. If not that, I'd definitely keep going - it's amazing how hear adjusts and greatly reduces the amount of grease it produces after only a couple of wee...

IR: 1.6 IR2: 2.35 What would be the optimal score? I don't think more is always better, i.e. although '2' is almost always better than '1', a '6' might not be better than, say '3'? Example: someone in their 60's with score of '6' made of something like: 1) state pension 2) company pension 3) stocks ...

Someone working mimimum wage job for only long enough to earn $7k pa will obviously never retire earlier than the state pension age. Assuming $7 per hour, 100 hours a year is required to earn the $7k needed for baseline spending. Between ages 18-68 that's 50,000+ hours spent working potentially unfu...

I also find social capital tricky. I usually go to great lengths to avoid tapping it whenever possible. So I'd rather buy a new tool than borrow it from a friend, or pay for a taxi instead of asking a friend to pick me from the airport at night. I think this is due to my personality and worldview - ...

Job hunting is often a numbers game, especially in tough markets like nowadays. I like framing a job interview as a 'win-win' situation: either I get a job I want, or at the very least I get some free interviewing practice which will help me being successful next time. Treat it as a data point, anal...

Re: Fire in Europe: Which portfolio composition?

There are very many ways to do this, but if you're just starting out and have another decade of work ahead of you, going all in stocks to maximise return makes most sense. Some time before retirement and once your stash has decent size, you might want to start adding more defensive assets like bonds...

There are quite a few issues with leaving an unoccupied 'base' while traveling long-term. One is an obvious opportunity cost of tied in capital. There are also all the usual bills which one is still liable to pay, like factor fees, standing charge for electricity etc. Then there's 100% additional co...

Timely post from ERN on this exact subject (his whole SWR series is well worth a read) - in short, it depends on what you're trying to optimise for; if your risk tolerance is high, you might even ride 100% equites all the way to firing: https://earlyretirementnow.com/2021/03/02/pre-retirement-glidep...
