Re: ffj's early retirement

I learn so much from this journal, thanks for the continuous updates.

I apologize if this has come up before and I missed it but could you summarize what kind of permitting/inspections you've had to do to this point, if any? And what will need to be done going forward?

Re: COVID-19: Unwinding the Lockdown and Long Term Epidemic

*thread derailed, removed text* Back on Topic: I'm in spiky metro area in FL and things are back to their April peak in terms of affecting my work-life. We've had 5 cases which constituted floor shutdowns since last Friday. The employer is trying hard to justify not disclosing cases (x amount of day...

Re: COVID-19: Unwinding the Lockdown and Long Term Epidemic

This is exactly what the Democrats have done for 3 years. Not sure what you mean there? Complaining about how the electoral college should work (or not exist) is not the same as saying voting results are fraudulent. And btw I'm not comparing Trump to Dems (Carter was the #1 in Fed judges lol), just...

Re: COVID-19: Unwinding the Lockdown and Long Term Epidemic

Trump is the least powerful US president in my lifetime ... It's amusing that intelligent people are afraid Trump's going to become an autocratic dictator. Sorry for the off-topic but hard disagree. Least effective != least powerful. He's made it his mission to stack the judicial system (second mos...

Re: being bored at home and food procurement -- ever try baking? Baking kind of satiates my need for science experiments in the house and there's a moving-target quality to improving most baked goods.

Re: bottlerocks ERE Exploration

I guess I'm going roughly Fibonacci with my journal updates. I'm feeling very un-grounded lately. This pandemic plays its part, sure, but it has been a long standing/growing sentiment. Reflecting on my last journal update makes me antsy. Life/happiness is a known answer test at this point but for so...

I see Jacob has a new writing project after Brute was retired....I kid I kid. Very interesting journal. I often buy stake in a friend of mine who is a somewhat successful live circuit player (winnings near 100k). My ROI is ~30% to date...obviously this changes radically every tournament. His post-FI...

@thrifty I'm in the Tampa Bay area, closer to the Gulf than the bay. I can bike to work and the beach in less than 10 minutes and downtown in about 20...I can't believe how affordable it is considering all that. I highly recommend. As for the knee haha yes, I have had 7 surgeries and many MRIs etc. ...

@Chris It's been bone on bone for 10+ years from a teenage injury so my arthritis is advanced. It is what it is, replacement is my only course of action and I'm putting that off as long as possible. Luckily it doesn't really get in the way of weight lifting (no bad spurs), squatting 200lb+ is possib...

Re: bottlerocks ERE Exploration

I've been lightly lurking in the forums for the past year while weird political tensions were high, things seem to have maybe cooled down a bit and I'm back to reading a bit more regularly. My FI progress has stayed pretty much linear. My personal life has done some loops but I guess is linearly pro...

Re: bottlerocks ERE Exploration

2016 update and recap time. Thanks to high market valuations I'm currently at 8 years current expenses and 10 of ideal expenses. I'm roughly on track for a 2022 FIRE date just based on WR but I suspect I'll have side income enough to easily justify 2021. Core expenses were ~$20,000, frivolity ~$5000...

The other thread got locked specifically because of this so I would take Jacob's route and only reply when you absolutely can't resist any longer (like 1/25 of the times it happens).

Re: Bitcoin on the rise

Jacob there's a wrinkle in all of this which is Difficulty. Basically bitcoins are mined at a constant rate no matter what, it's just that those who "try harder" get more (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proof-of-work_system). So if you were the only person mining for now until 2140, your cost would b...

Some concise big picture analysis: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WoWY2UzIB_8 Sorry I mean no disrespect but, in the first two minutes I heard - a "big picture" description where he basically just describes the past in a textbook rear view mirror analisys that is worth zero. - "this has been growi...

Not with GPUs. There have been 7-8 generations of ASIC development that have made each previous generation of mining hardware obsolete. There has been a lot of shady dealings with mining hardware developers in the past (see Butterfly Labs & KNC Miners for good examples) so I've stopped following who...

BSc in Math here, a little further along than yourself. Anecdotally the skills that have benefited me the most in my career progression are: Applied math (aero/physics[radar,kinematics]/DSP/numerical analysis/machine learning[classification, Kalman filtering]), Scripting (Python/MATLAB), and being w...

Re: Soft drink consumption

My died soft drink consumption is insane, I average over 2 cans/day during the week and probably 1/day during the weekend. I don't enjoy coffee/tea so I guess this is my caffeine replacement. I've found that almost anything carbonated/caffeinated will fit my needs but diet soda in bulk seems to be t...

I guess I'm turning this into a semi-annual journal now haha. A lot has transpired in the past 6 months but it felt like it happened over a much longer timeframe. The biggest three occurrences would be that I've finally moved to central FL, I found a job here that didn't require making any FI timeli...
