Winter Heating Challenge/Log

As most probably know, the world is facing a potential energy crunch this winter. Prices are at multi year (possibly decade) highs and even some talks of shortages, particularly with propane. A glimpse of the not too distant future perhaps? We are using this as a good opportunity to push our 'comfor...

Re: cmonkey's journal

I have a question regarding income taxes. I know @jacob is an expert at doing these on his own, so maybe he'd know the answer here. As of now, next year my income will be ~30K. ~4.5K of this will be dividend income and the remaining 25.5K will be in the form of interest/roth conversion. Now the stan...

When will we reach a time when we realize that senior discounts need to be ended?

... but getting snowed in? ... Take a look at that video I posted above. The first 3 minutes basically tell the entire story. I'm not particularly concerned about a single winter storm/blizzard event, more concerned about the 'once a century' events which eventually start turning into 'once a decad...

Re: cmonkey's journal

I have read a good deal of research on link between NSAIDS and colitis and solid conclusions have not yet been reached. It's not directly linked at this point, but it is indeed linked to peptic ulcers/stomach damage and also small intestine damage. I think I saw the estimate is that 70% of adults w...

Re: cmonkey's journal

Key is to avoid overthinking it (rare) but also to avoid underthinking it (common) #Texas That is the balance I need to strike. It's far too easy for me to over think it and I need to reign it in. We are on a 500 gallon propane tank, which might be better than natural gas in the end because I have ...

Re: cmonkey's journal

September 2021 Update I've been slowly realizing I live in the future far too much and need to bring myself into the present more. Like any other INTJ, I spend a lot of time thinking about things that could happen, particularly bad things, and trying to make plans for them. This has a tendency to b...

Re: cmonkey's journal

I hope you're putting a tarp over the wood. Your racks resemble mine, except mine are more formally built (and inside the polebarn). Not planning to cover it and yea I didn't want to buy any lumber so I just cut some straightish trees down, sunk them in the ground and strapped them to the pallets. ...

Re: cmonkey's journal

Exciting day today, the inspection contingency on our home sale has been removed with no repairs being requested! Closing is in 4 weeks. We actually made about 9K in profit on the sale of this home, although it went right into our new home. If I include all of our utility bills in the cost of the ho...

Re: cmonkey's journal

Yea I think it makes sense to count the CTC as income. The property tax credit I am on the fence about even though it is deposited in my account, it is specifically tied to that expense. I feel like doing mid month updates on what I'm up to, so here goes. Currently reading these which I picked up to...

reduction of expenses
So then does that open up the door to counting my 3600 in child tax credit as a reduction of expenses for bmonkey?

Somehow this feels like it would be cheating my WR lower.

Re: cmonkey's journal

So in Minnesota, homeowners get a tax credit toward their property taxes depending on income. With income of about 29K minus a deduction for the kid our 'income' will be about 21K I believe. This level of income will cut our property taxes which means instead of spending 2600 we'll spend about 1000....

Long time no speak! Please report back on the Perlin's book, its been on my wish list for ages and haven't pulled the trigger! Hope the little one is well, if you think a 2 yo is bad, wait until she's 3  I finished the book before the 3 week return date but it was a bit of a slog TBH. The book...

Re: Garden Log

Do you let some of your crop go to seed and harvest the seeds for planting next year? Yes we usually do. We also let some plants go to seed and let the seed spread around. Lettuce is really easy to do this with, and then you also get crops as soon as possible because the seeds will start growing ve...

August 2021 Update My first month of retirement was a pretty big whirlwind and went really fast. I spent the first week prepping for a colonoscopy. After that we started getting ready for a large 3 family garage sale. DW did most of the organizing and stuff but I helped a lot too. We didn't make as...

@Andy, The bowel issue is settling down a bit, albeit I don't know if it'll ever go away. I've been thinking about it and I don't even know if Kale is related as that's a small bowel thing and I'm having rectal bleeding. I've noticed a clear correlation between the amount of blood and the consistenc...
