Re: Ideas for Earning Interest on House Down Payment Money?

For my credit union, 2% CD is locked away for 5 years. I would guess similar for other institutions. Personally I'd just hold it in cash in a savings account, as I can't think of anything that would give you some yield, or if the time line is longer than the CD length, I'd just get more CDs. oooor p...

Re: How to Manage Junk Mail?

You can opt out from pre-approved credit cards using this site . You can also use DMAchoice to opt out of a whole lot more including catelogs, insurance offers, etc...I did this (or similar) like 2-3 years ago and the results have been good. Keep in mind this is more for unsolicited junk, you'll sti...

Here is a comprehensive list.

With a SD of (2 X Jacob) per person, should make ERE a breeze now!

Re: Pre-Existing Conditions

My open enrollment is in June and there will likely be a baby after June as well, so I'd like to have those all on one year. Without children, the cost of our best plan is actually half the price of the deductible of our cheapest plan which is why I'd like to wait until June to do this. Once we had ...

Pre-Existing Conditions

So I believe Obamacare made it so insurance companies cannot deny you coverage if you have a pre-existing condition, purchase their insurance and then expect coverage. How about switching policies within the same company during the normal course of business (annual change)? Long story short, I get t...

Re: Investments Trade Log

Any thoughts on MRK's selloff? All I can see is that they had a cyberattack which impacted results by a couple percentage points and that they withdrew their application for Keytruda from Europe, which is one of their fastest growing items. Or is it the 2.3 billion charge for the colab with AZN? The...

Re: cmonkey's journal

I'm already figuring out how to do it. :) I really wish I had looked at this idea before putting down the patio because the patio is a perfect heat sink for something like this, being brick and all.

It wasn't too hard to put down and I'd only need to dig part of it.

Re: cmonkey's journal

Yea there are lots of neat ideas out there. The best one I saw was a guy that had PVC pipe laid out under the floor of his greenhouse that collected hot air from the peak of the greenhouse during the day. It heated up the gravel bed which released heat at night. I think that was his only source of h...

Re: cmonkey's journal

@vexed, Thanks! We have a few things in there already and I also built a couple "planters" and have some greens started. Arugula, lettuce, spinach and mizuna. I'm going to try keeping them going. I'm going to run a furnace duct to it to see how warm it will stay. I also have a bunch of bubble wrap a...

Haha hedge apples. We have a bunch out back and my MIL always brings a bunch back to MN with her because all the old ladies NEED them to keep spiders away.

They sell for like 4-5 bucks each in stores around here, despite being completely useless as anything other than a really AWESOME looking fruit.

Re: Men in America: Lonely, Ashamed and Deprived of Play

Loneliness sells, probably more than sex. Create a culture where everyone has a big gaping hole in their heart that was once filled by friendship and intimacy and offer them endless trinkets to fill that hole. Everyone knows that consumerism is depressing and so its no wonder that a few go crazy.

I've had my 401K in a very cheap ( $8/year) S&P 500 index for the past 2 years. I can't count the number of times I've considered switching it out when we break through another tally mark. Now that I've left my old employer and we've crossed 2500, it seems appropriate to take my gains and run for th...

Outstanding! I love your life. The greenhouse isn't shabby, either. I see a LOT of those in my line of work when driving up in the mountains in Humboldt county, CA. Seems like if you hooked it up to a heating duct it would grow year round? Thanks dagiffy. :) Hopefully! We get cold here in the midwe...

Stats look great! Harbor Freight greenhouse? Thanks. :) It's a Palram brand bought through Wayfair. It's pretty decent, but the plastic is thin. I'm going to hook up a furnace duct and vent it into the greenhouse to see if we can keep it heated, along with a small space heater and lots of bubble wr...

October 2017 Update We've made a lot of progress over the past 4 months. FI funds just topped 150K and networth is approaching 300K which includes our paid off homestead. Expenses have stayed pretty consistent this summer, except for September, which saw us put in a patio so we could build our gree...

Post Formating

So I'm trying to write up a post and change the size of text, but I can't go any higher than 'Normal', which is size=100. I tried to hack in 150 but it won't let me. Was this changed recently? I did recently switch to a Mac, so this might be it? The larger sizes are very good for journal posts where...

I came away with about 135 lbs, which is probably just under a 1/3 of the boned out, carcass weight of the moose I shot. I estimate total expenses around $100, resulting in costs of about $0.74/lb for about the highest quality meat you can find. I'll take it. That is awesome. How long will that las...

We live on .85 jacobs, or about $6K each currently which is down from nearly double that about 5 years ago. Re: How to get High-Deductible health insurance?

Its not that hard to do your own research. ehealthinsurance.com is probably the best place to look and it is the source of @jacob's <100/month plan if I remember right. I am guessing this was at ERE income levels though.

I would just stick with your company insurance and not complicate it.

And having to drive in rush hour traffic to get to work absolutely sucked. There is some value in this though, because when you jump back in from time to time you realize just how good you have it. :) That's how my last 2 weeks at my last job were anyway, jumping from commute-less work back to comm...
