Re: Clothes drying rack repairing and building

If you have an Aldi near you they sell seasonal items and a fold-up laundry rack almost identical to this one is one of them. We got ours for ~5 bucks if I remember and it holds a medium sized load. It is super strong and has withstood blowing over a couple of times.

Re: Investments Trade Log

I ran my numbers this morning for each account since the peak on Jan 26th, and the IRAs are not beating the indexes while my Roth, Taxable and HSA are beating the indexes, for a net of about .5% beating so far. So not bad for my first time. I'll be honest, I'm not very excited by this so far as I do...

Re: Expensive dinners and drinks with friends

It takes seeing this kind of thing in person to actually believe it happens. I went to CO on a business trip last month and we all went out to eat and had drinks, paid for on company tab. The restaurant bill was north of $500 and the drinks tab was over $400 I believe. It was pretty normal to everyo...

Re: Investments Trade Log

One thing I did today was to calculate my portfolio betas. This can easily be done in googlesheets using =googlefinance(TICKER,"beta")*... Do you mean beta for the day? I don't go that far but I do make a mental note each day on whether I beat the indexes or not. I probably should get some better m...

Re: Investments Trade Log

Finally a nice little correction. This is the first time I've lost any substantial amount of capital value since starting this journey (currently down 1 year of expenses from 1 week ago) and it's not really that scary.

Edit - Make that a very nice correction!

Re: Is It Just Me or Do HSAs Suck?

At Fidelity the HSA fee is a flat 12/quarter which I find reasonable. A lot of employers will pay the fee for you at Fidelity as well. I only make 1 to 2 transactions per year so add another $10 to that, so I pay about $60 annually which means a fee of .2% and dropping. The fee is waived if you have...

Congrats on a quarter million! Even if a large drop is coming, it could go up another 30% before dropping 20% and then you'd still be up 10% if you buy now. Irrational exuberance tends to go on longer than anyone thinks it will. I have been having these thoughts since mid-2015 when I started buying ...

Re: ffj's early retirement

Winter is horrid. This winter has been extremely cold compared to the last couple, with our bottom temps hitting -20F a few times, and on top of that we've gotten 6-10 inches of snow. Most of it melted, but still some around. I miss being outside. :( I do tromp out to the chickens each afternoon tho...

Re: "He'll get used to it" - Parenting

+1 to above. I think the tough love crowd is pretty cruel. A crying baby is generally trying to tell you that it needs something, and at that age (especially under 6 months) all they need is a clean diaper, food and lots of love. They don't cry in the sense of a spoiled 3 year old crying, who might ...

@light_bulb_moment, thanks! I wish I could be in my garden right now! Almost every month now for the past year I have had either fla...

Scary stuff! I'm glad you worked through it and found a floor in your online income. I'm also really impressed with your ability to earn a buck online, start losing it and get it right back again. My adventure in online income was a supernova of income for about 2 weeks which trailed off into the st...

Re: Balance between Health, Money, and Time at the Supermarket

Costco quality is stellar, and completely night and day compared to Aldi and Walmart, whose lowest priced items usually fluctuate between terrible and abominable. Gonna have to call that one out. Aldi has pretty fantastic stuff at least here where I am. We buy 90% of our produce there and I think I...

Re: 2018 Goals/Resolutions Thread

I don't really do the whole resolution thing, but I'd like to continue developing the good habits I've been working on for the past 6 months or so. 1. Eat no meat. 2. Daily cardio a minimum of 4 times a week. 3. Knock 2K off of annual expenses. 4. Start each day by reading or being in the garden for...

@Gilberto, Thanks. I need to keep things in perspective probably. I didn't think it was very spectacular, but then again its just routine now. Re: Balance between Health, Money, and Time at the Supermarket

For us: 1. No processed food - if you don't buy sour cream, you don't need to look at labels. 2. No meat, especially processed - this will cut down on costs and be very good for health. Very easy to implement. 3. No eating out - if you do eat out, go to a place you know has good options. Indian plac...

December 2017 Update It's been a full quarter since my last update, but I don't have too much of an update since October other than FI funds have increased from 150K to 171K. Re: How do you come up with a life plan?

I am not much of a planner in the traditional sense, despite being full fledged INTJ. In general I try to project myself forward in time and imagine how current decisions will affect 'future me', particularly with big life decisions. Try to connect 'current you' to 'future you'. Personally, I try to...

Yea these people were just annoying as hell, making bad decisions and wanting the government and others to essentially bail them out. That's the "retirement crisis" in a nutshell. Well except for the couple with the little girl born with a heart defect. She is so cute and I do feel bad for them. +1 ...

Thanks Gilberto. :) I need to share updates more often. Our lows have been in the 20's, with a few nights getting down near 10 F. Highs are in the 30's lately so pretty seasonable. The southwest corner we have this in tends to stay about 5 degrees warmer than away from the house even at night so tha...
