Re: How will you evaluate this job offer

Another take from a veteran salaryman perspective: I don't see the downside in taking the job and trying it on to see if it fits. Even at 160% of your prior pay it's a pretty significant bump. Worst-case is it turns out to be a bad fit and you resign again. That said, you seem to have reservations. ...

Re: A Jacob Mention

7Wb5, I did not feel picked on at all. I did sort of miss the point I think. I was not thinking at all of financial flows, just the shallower observation that my desire for convenient quasi-isolation is expensive. "Leveling up" beyond ereWL2 or ereWL3 is something I can't speak to at all. ...

Re: A Jacob Mention

Speaking of holons, one of my ongoing confusions is the artificial boundary between individual, household, tribe, community, country when it comes to influence over spending/energy usage. For instance, I will pick on IlliniDave because I know he is a sturdy indestructible good sport, and note that ...

Re: A Journey of Mindfulness--the Remaking of Life in Midstream.

@IlliniDave I may have missed this and cannot see the whole picture, but it seems like if you just head out the door and they DO decide that a transition is necessary you would be in a much better negotiating position rather than just extending to part time remote. Extending is the most convenient ...

Re: Semi-retirement locations?

Low property taxes (and low interest rates) unfortunately correlates to higher housing prices. I'm looking at selling a place in N. Alabama and buying a place in N. Illinois over the next 6 months. I can buy a better house in Illinois for 40%-50% under what my current home projects to sell for. But ...

Getting laid off on the cusp of retirement is the holy grail for people with one foot out the corporate door. Unfortunately looks l...

@iDave really interesting. Do you (or anyone) have thoughts or observations on how to avoid being lonely old person? Any stories of elderly with no family who still managed to be socially engaged and in a support network through to their ends? ... I'm also interested in anyone who knows old people ...

Re: Methods and examples of highly developed social capital

A turn in the other thread got me thinking about this one. Looking at professions, politicians and lobbyists are two that come to mind that leverage a lot of social capital. Business- and salespeople are crude private world analogs. Being "professionals" they are exchanging social capital ...

Re: Systems!- Level 6 towards 7

Is it possible to learn to enjoy a fat stash of social capital in the same way someone learns to enjoy wine or enjoys playing tennis after they get the basics down? The typical trajectory is for people to need increasing amounts of help as they age. That is not true for everyone but is true for mos...

Re: UAPs .. This changes everything?

I've been loosely following this over the last few months. I don't know what to make of the phenomenology. An attempt at intellectual honestly makes me conclude that there's much our unsettled science cannot yet explain, despite our ability to to catch fleeting glimpses. I'm skeptical that we're cat...

Re: A Journey of Mindfulness--the Remaking of Life in Midstream.

Well, I made it out to meet my friend last night. First time out at a public eatery/drinkery since September 2019. Way too many of the women looked good. I think I've been cooped up for too long. I did make it out of there unscathed, mostly because my alcohol consumption was only token. I didn...

@IlliniDave - The medical expenses are about 14k in premiums, plus 4k last year for birth of child ... Okay, yeah, that makes a big difference in your numbers. Whenever I participate in "Can I retire?" discussions I always answer from the perspective of what would I do in the same situati...

I'm glad you are one step closer even if it isn't totally sorted out yet. Very happy for you! Thanks. I think the part about my transition from employment is pretty close to being settled. Apparently there is a second set of paperwork I need to file with HR, a "termination package". Submi...

Re: A Journey of Mindfulness--the Remaking of Life in Midstream.

As a side note, I'm surprised you only have 2 weeks' notice, especially considering your senior role and that you've been at the company for decades. In the UK even entry level jobs often have a month's notice while as a lowly analyst I'm chained with 3 months' notice. Might be just a sign of a muc...

Good luck, IlliniDave. I'm very happy for you, and also jealous. You are in terrific shape, financially and otherwise. What you are doing today will certainly be stressful and emotional, so I am not making light of it. Still, if you aren't ready for retirement, I'm not certain anybody is. So again,...
