Re: A Journey of Mindfulness--the Remaking of Life in Midstream.

Wrapping up September. Spending came in 31.1% below annuity income which isn't stellar but I'm happy with it. Withdrawal rate remains 0%. If I can tighten my belt a little over the next 3 months 2021 spending can come in below $40K which was the first level of "dialed-back" spending I used...

Re: Escaping statistics: the starkest examples of fields not lending themselves to statistics

From an engineering perspective statistics have their place, but it's pretty rare that problems get 'tackled' by them--at least in the sort of engineering I was involved in. They help in defining the problem to be solved (e.g., define the load characteristics a power system has to cover) and assessi...

Re: A Journey of Mindfulness--the Remaking of Life in Midstream.

Yes and no. ... Thanks, quite a lot of good information there--something I need to study up on over the winter. What I saw some days ago was constrained to an elevation angle of 10-20 degrees, so it probably was a realtively weak display. I've seen photos taken nearby where the visuals extended to ...

Re: The 4% Rule – A Castle in the Air

... This most recently reared its ugly head in I had a rare moment of good internet yesterday evening and had a chance to listen to my favorite podcasters for the first time since early June. Coincidentally, they spent a lot of time in their most recent episode discussing the same issue and the ric...

Re: Mental health consequences of ERE

Hmm, I thought I responded to this earlier. Either I forgot to submit or it got deleted. I've always had good mental health and retiring has only enhanced it. In general I'd say someone who is having a lot of stress over money/investing should consider not retiring (yet). In my initial response I di...

Sounds like you saw a Starlink/smallsat satellite train. ... Ah, I looked up some images and yes, that was almost certainly what I saw. Cool. I'm only at about 48 deg N latitude here, dunno if that makes a difference. But the 4 we had visible this summer, none were intense enough for a naked human ...

Re: A Journey of Mindfulness--the Remaking of Life in Midstream.

Woke up in the middle of the night and couldn't get back to sleep so a few random add-ons. For the first time in my adult life I witnessed the aurora borealis a few nights ago. In hindsight I feel foolish--I hadn't realized how much of the spectacular images we see are aided by digital camera tricke...

Re: A Journey of Mindfulness--the Remaking of Life in Midstream.

This weekend I'll be closing down things at the hideout and heading back to the Real World. One day next week once I'm settled I'll update financials when the final numbers are in. Sneak peak would be the portfolio got brutalized again but spending was okay, I think I'll come in 20-25% below annuity...

... There's no hiding from the pain. The two portfolios that hurt the least are the ones with commodities allocations as oil has carried the day. But yes, it's rough out there. Hey Tyler9000, nice to see you stop by. The chart you shared made me feel a little better. At last check the iDavePhaseIII...

Re: Housing Affordability Index

I.e. Cambridge, MA Yea. Illinois for accumulating and Tennessee for retirement is what I read from this map. Since I'm retiring rather late and therefore expect a relatively short retirement, it seems to make more sense to retire in Illinois after doing most of my accumulting in TN/AL. That way I c...

Re: Housing Affordability Index

Illinois for the win. Until taxes are due  Be interesting to see data for a mortgage payment index as most people seem to buy based on how large of a mortgage payment they can make. I suspect in Illinois relatively low home prices are due in good measure to very high property tax rates. What's...

Re: ERE Motivation:

I wrote a lot about this a number of years ago in my journal. TL/DR: I wanted an escape from too many years of money-driven stress to a simpler more tranquil life. I can only talk about ER because by the time I got headed in that direction it was way too late for "early". Happened fairly q...

Not once that I can recall. Used to daydream about winning the lottery or some other windfall back in the days when I felt I could barely tread water enough to keep from drowning though.

Re: Blackrock calling for the end of the Great Moderation Era

This time it's different. Does read a bit like a subtle sales pitch for professional management services--the era of market timing is upon us! I enjoy reading that sort of stuff though. If they are correct I am probably in trouble over the long haul. First time I've seen over-politicization explicit...

Isn't that just the equivalent of taking a company private?
I think that's an option, not sure the technical mechanism to change its status from publicly traded to privately owned. Alternately it could probably go on as-is with the option of issuing new shares in the future to raise capital.

Re: buybacks - I have a silly side question: what happens when the company buys back 100% of its stock and effectively owns itself? Who gets put on the board of directors? I'm guessing that, since the owner of company A is company A, the current management gets to decide who the new directors will ...

Re: The 4% Rule – A Castle in the Air

The big question is why ? I thought that paper was poor because the goal of having money last forever is easy. You just go 100% broad stock index and have a 2% or even higher WR. The goal was even more rigid. It was to have all descendants receive identical, unvarying, inflation-adjusted payouts in...
