Re: What if everybody did it?

Libertarians of the Benjamin Tucker persuasion thought that a small government would result in an even distribution of capital. Ironically, this maps the ideas of marxists hoping/fighting for a widespread ownership of capital by the masses. It is also quite similar to the idea of the citizen's divid...

Re: What is the most important thing in a long term relationship / marriage?

Based on my experience a good relationship rests on the two pillars of mutual trust and epic sex.

Re: When did debt become acceptable?

The thing with debt that is usually forgotten is the other side for whom that debt is an asset. Paying off (or cancelling) debt also means removing this asset. Debt is a deal between person A and person B. Usually person B prefers to just silently collect money from person A for ... well ... :-) To ...

Re: Vegan

Indian and asian food is great cheap vegan fare. Asian food is basically veggie stir fry based on which veggies are on sale (supplemented with carrots which are usually cheap). Indian is some sort of dal (legume soup/sauce). Get the spices in bulk. Get lots of garlic and ginger. Eat these with lots ...

Re: Fundamental Laws of Stupidity

In terms of what to do against stupidity (especially your own), I like the Cosmic Schmuck principle . It seems to point at the underlying cause of stupidity. The Cosmic Schmuck Principle holds that if you don't wake up, once a month at least, and realize you have recently been acting like a Cosmic S...

Re: Why do humans care about other humans?

Caring and altruism are the default mode for humans as this is beneficial for a social species living in small tribes. The whole thing kind of breaks down beyond 150-300 or so people , when our mental capacity to maintain a theory of mind reaches a limit of memory space. This is why charity on a lar...

Re: "A Path Appears" they presume you are a calculating egoist

This is both obvious and necessary to point out as there is a widespread negative knee-jerk reaction to anything that can be spin-doctored into government involvement being inherently evil. Not even a cost-benefit analysis in financial terms (completely ignoring benefits to human well-being) will wo...

Re: Conservatives/Liberals Hardwired Differently

I don't want to derail the thread. I just wanted to point out that it is probably not willingness to change things that is the difference between conservatives and liberals and this was the obvious example. And maybe dividing 300 million people into two groups and then making statements about these ...

I really couldn't tell either way thanks to the follow-up.   They also live in trailers, keep animals, criticize our American way of life and take our jobs. The ...

Re: Low cost living and quality of life/safety issues

Personally, I am most concerned with the recent wave of immigrants from Northern Europe. You know they don't shower with hot water and they eat nothing but beans. Have you ever had to sit next to one on a bus? It's disgusting. You are among cold-showering bean-eaters here. http://forum.earlyretirem...

Re: Your Legacy

From my perspective a legacy is some way of making the world a bit more livable and enjoyable for others - if they know my name is of no importance in this. It would be nice to believe that I play my part in a greater development towards that goal. Maybe to some degree we all do already. I'm not eve...

Re: Conservatives/Liberals Hardwired Differently

I'm not sure conservatives want no change. Removing the goverment-provided social safety net is quite a change. Did liberals become conservative and vice versa with the New Deal?

Is there a correlation between MBTI-type and political affiliation?

thanks for proving my point....."Hate speech" and "racist" are the terms used most often to try and silence opposing viewpoints....Sorry, but we have free speech in America as much as some try to take away that free speech... Saying "you said hate speech and racist" to...
