Re: Getting around crazy building codes
Thank you, theanimal, but this is high winter season. There are no vacancies in parks, even if I had an RV, which I don't. I'll bookmark it for later, though, just in case.

Re: Getting around crazy building codes
No mobile home parks are cheap in FL, believe me. I've looked. Sometimes you can find one to rent a MH in for around $650 a month, but nothing cheaper than that.
I have my eye on a cute little cottage that is open in August. I have to leave here in April, but I'll figure something out before then.

Re: There's No Place Like My Ideologically Homogeneous Home
It's the same as "white flight" back in the 60's and 70's. When they integrated the schools, all the racists moved out to the burbs. Now they are stuck out there, having to drive 30 miles to work at $4 a gallon in their SUV's. I don't feel sorry for them.

Re: Belong to a HOA?
When I bought my house, there were similar houses 5 miles away, but they had a mandatory HOA. I bought mine because it was not deed restricted. I feel sorry for that woman. There needs to be a law against this, but look what the banks did. They loaned out imaginary money that was just numbers in com...

I used to have a cat who would lay on a scarf and let me use him for a weight.

Re: Getting around crazy building codes
@Angelpie - About the biggest RV you can get may be 350 sqft and that's HUGE (and hard to drive around). Are you saying there are no RV parks in Florida? I'd just pick two parks and move between them. Or move to Texas (RV friendly!). Always consider [some variant of] the "engineering triangle&...

Thank you all for trying to help. I actually did well today writing. Made nearly $100. If I could do that every day, I'd be fine.

Re: Perils of buying on Craigslist
I have gotten a lot of stuff from Craigslist and Freecycle, but my favorite place to get stuff is on the curb. I am a consummate curb shopper, and love fixing up and flipping the freebies. I lived in a college town once in an apartment complex with a lot of students. I moved into my apartment with a...

Re: Old and Broke - Angelpie's Life and Times
1) my expenses now are extremely low, because I rent what is basically a room with an unfinished bath, so those won't be my expenses for long, as I have to move out of her in April so she can finish the bathroom and bring her mother home. 2) I get food stamps, but there is no medicaid for adults in ...

Re: Getting around crazy building codes
Jacob, I need at least 500sf to be comfortable. I'm pretty much living in 211 sf now, and it's making me claustrophobic. I really want more space. Tiny houses aren't expensive if you build them yourself. I really think 500 sf is a tiny house. It's hard to get permission to live in a travel trailer i...

Re: Getting around crazy building codes
@Angelpie: Very interesting and impressive, but I'm shocked if it's legal... If it is legal he must have aggressively pushed the "green" angle. What RealZeal and Riggerjack; go existing structure, go rural... If in doubt call the city. Call the city from a public phone if you already own ...

Re: Getting around crazy building codes
Just found this, so I'm encouraged. Gainesville is in north central FL, pretty rural all around it. If they let this be in the city, they would surely let one be in the country.

Re: Personality Test
I've been professionally tested three times and certified as a very strong INFJ. It's a hindrance a lot of the time, especially in taking care of myself, since I want to take care of others. I also have no ambition to make large amounts of money, so I literally have to force myself to earn enough to...

Re: Mindless accumulation
I have been someone who did that. I used to be addicted to thrift shopping. Even though I needed nothing, I would come home with bags full of stuff. When I had to move, it all went off for free on Craigslist. Now I never buy anything I don't have a use and a space for.

Re: Old and Broke - Angelpie's Life and Times
Hi, I'm semi-old and semi-broke so I can empathize. One thing you might consider is that one market advantage you have over the average 29 year old man is that you have a better chance of bartering domestic skills for free housing/food. There are millions of extra empty bedrooms in houses in this c...

Re: Old and Broke - Angelpie's Life and Times
I'm not an american so I don't know much about the system, but shouldn't there be social security payments of some form in your future if you are nearing standard retirement age after working a full career? Have you calculated how much those would be and the earliest they would become available? Fo...

Re: Old and Broke - Angelpie's Life and Times
Firstly, I'm sorry to hear that your long standing plan was taken away from you suddenly. I know you said you want your independence, but I don't think anyone here would encourage a lady in her presumably late 50's to live in her car... Would you consider moving in with one of your kids for a coupl...

Re: Getting around crazy building codes
Riggerjack, I wouldn't ever plan on selling. I'm really looking for somewhere to live for the rest of my life. Actually, bottle bricks are stronger than regular bricks -- not as much air space -- and pallet structures that are bolted together and set to 4 stable posts set in concrete at the corners ...

Re: Old and Broke - Angelpie's Life and Times
I'm just wondering how the company screwed you, if you were really all prepared? Were you relying on a pension and they went bankrupt? I don't mean to sound like a dick, I'm just curious how you ended up with all your eggs in one basket. Do your new plans have less reliance on a single company? Yes...
