Taking and interest in ERE/FI doesn't mean you have to pursue either in their "pure" sense. A hybrid solution may well be optimal for a lot of people, so I wouldn't say you necessarily have to be FI before you give up the day job...although obviously you may as well keep your options open ...

I've seen a couple of threads recently which seem to judge other people largely on the basis of their levels of wealth/earning abilities etc. But even within the context of ERE, wealth is not really an end in itself, but simply an enabler to freedom and thereby also to happiness or a sense of fulfil...

I'm a little cautious about the word hero, but the first example of an exceptional human which comes to my mind is Ranulph Fiennes. Adaptable - displayed both in his army career and later his adventuring Risk taking - the story of why he was discharged from the SAS is entertaining and worth looking up

Well done on the interview. You shouldn't stop yourself getting excited - enthusiasm is surely a selling point in an interview. I have the opposite problem, that I find it hard to express interest even when it's quite strong inside my head.

I find my monthly expenditure is up to around £500, but that's with subsidised accommodation through work, so I'm always interested to hear about others in the UK.
