Good job with the debt. Nothing wrong with saving 60% either.

Re: How to handle cashback bonuses?

I'm planning to make a large purchase for a hobby of mine: crash pads for bouldering.
Try looking on craigslist, at the gym, and on mountainproject for good deals. Apparently they can get used up though, so watch out for that.

Re: Gilberto de Piento's Journal

Can you still enter your info for free on TurboTax? (it used to be that you didn't pay anything until it was time to file) That would be a way to check numbers between two different programs. Thanks for the advice! First I went to HRBlock in person but they wanted $350 to start on my taxes and they...

Re: How Many Allowances to Claim on W4 Tax Form?

I'm not sure how you owe so much more. Was the $10K a raise or bonus? Then the taxes should have come out of your paycheck. Was it a new business and you didn't pay any estimated taxes? Did you reach an income level where you were phased out of certain tax credits? It's hard to answer without knowi...

How Many Allowances to Claim on W4 Tax Form?

How many allowances should I be taking on my W4 tax form? Right now I am taking two but I don't know why. I think HR set it that way. In previous years I've always had to pay in to federal taxes but never more than $1000. This year I earned about $10,000 in extra income and it looks like I am going ...

Re: Gilberto de Piento's Journal

I made more money in 2017 and didn't pay any taxes on it during the year. The HRBlock website is estimating that I owe about $3800 in taxes, plus an underpayment penalty of $77 due to $10,000 or so in extra income. I'm still waiting for one more form for my taxes to be final but that form will only ...

You guys read so much into my words that isn't there that I don't think we can talk about this. I'm bowing out. Unrelated, here is an article about Buffett's son and how much Warren Buffett has or has not helped him over the years. I found it interesting: https://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.ph...

Re: Warren Buffett

Being contemptuous of the rich is like being contemptuous of Michael Phelps for being good at getting Gold Medals. Michael Phelps spent hours in cold water practicing his craft so he could get Olympic Gold. Rich people spend the same amount of time figuring out how to provide the goods and services...

Re: How to turn "high savings rate" into a daily habit

This is old news if you've read the blog, but try to reduce the big recurring expenses rather than the small one offs. For example, moving so that your rent is 20% cheaper and you can bike to work will have a bigger impact than repairing your shoes so you don't have to buy new ones so soon. It's bet...

IMO the peace corps is a classic example of virtue signaling: https://bir.brandeis.edu/bitstream/hand ... sequence=1 I sure am getting tired of some bystander pointing out "virtue signaling!" every time a person wants to do anything that isn't completely to benefit themselves. It's a great talking ...

Thanks for the detailed responses, they are very interesting. The book Population:485 https://www.amazon.com/Population-485-Meeting-Neighbors-Siren/dp/0061363502 has a lot of stories about being a volunteer firefighter. At some point in the past I heard a radio show where it was mentioned that peopl...

New goal: finish the professional certification I'm working on (sorry, don't want to say what this is) by the end of February so I don't have to pay for any more time to work on it. I don't have complete control over this as I am dependent on someone else taking time to grade my work but I'm to get ...

January 2018 Early in January I posted some goals. I worked hard and got lucky and met all of them early! :D 1. In January spend no money on anything that isn't "necessary" to make up for depraved December. Rent, utilities, food, gas, recurring bills are necessary. I’m sure there is still spending ...

Re: Anyone buy overpriced Yakima/Thule roof racks?

I may just use the foam pipe insulation method. The insulation method seems ok if you already have some bars to sell and can get a lot for them but in my location they go for about $30 for a pair on craigslist. By the time you buy a piece of pipe, cut it, order some tubing, and shrink it on it does...

Assuming you still want to be a counselor, have you considered looking for a job in the field or something related so you can try it out without committing to two years of school? Re: Tips for an indoor herb garden?

I tried putting rosemary cuttings in both water and moist potting soil. They died without having formed any roots. I'm trying the same thing with parsley right now. It hasn't died yet but it doesn't look like anything is going on. I think I need to use rooting hormone or to start from seeds. That sa...

A makerspace might be able to help with this if you have one nearby. They usually have 3D printers and other tools and may have done something like this before.

At one point I was interested in investing in single family rentals or duplexes but I couldn't find any where the numbers worked. People who were able to move fast on the deals during the recession set themselves up well but right now it doesn't seem feasible in my location. Some investors go to oth...
