Copied from C40 Journal thread comment. ebast wrote: my favorite description of a date restaurant I heard from a broker when looking at an apartment near the bronx: "Oh that's the restaurant where all the girls make their boyfriends take them so they can look at each other's shoes." Gossip...

Re: Darning armpits

I used to use clear nail polish to repair tights (in the 1970s when frugality was not yet out of fashion). A little dab on a run to stop it going mad. Certainly worked but I've never scaled it up over any length and saw it as a temporary measure until I could get the sewing needle out. (Such a girl ...

Re: Darning armpits

Suggest that on the fabric shirt you think about using woven cotton tape to reinforce the stitching or make a patch and sew your repair into this to offer reinforcement. Re: Perils of buying on Craigslist

Based in the UK so an ebay rather than a craigslist buyer. But we have tried (physical) auctions for furniture and these are highly recommended. Apart from the tips already mentioned there is also the 'staying til the end' tip. Some bargains to be had when the dealers have already filled their vans ...

Re: Not a New Year's Resolution for 2014 ...

@Seneca I see what you mean about balance - sounds sorted for you. I am from April 2014 going to be retired (whatever that means) and its the 'whatever that means' that I need to work on. I have to find a completely new set of balancing principles. Obviously for what replaces work but I have an opti...

Re: Not a New Year's Resolution for 2014 ...

Thanks 1tasaday for the idea of a theme rather than a resolution. I am not one for annual resolutions as usually I have a set of goals as part of a five year plan. With so many changes this year I need another (very different) 5 year plan. But I am happy to think of my objective (mindset) for 2014 a...

Re: Better Late Than Never

Two years ago this would have been an impossible thought for my brain to hold, but the more I looked and the more spreadsheets I built, the more it looked correct! Congratulations. I have so many versions of spreadsheets from the past year (best/worst cases and all scenarios in between) I know this...

Saving 10 years (exploring retirement) journal

Where am I going? Not too far as I am pretty much there on the FI front, but I hope to share some of the details of the rest of the journey. I am inspired by the ERE journals here, all of them but particularly in awe of those who are still in their 20s and 30s and so disciplined about all this. Plea...

Re: Cheap date ideas?

If you can find something that you both like doing (or at least agree to try doing) that does not cost money and gives you pleasure (this line of thought may be leading somewhere I didn't intend to take it so *other* than the obvious  ) then that is a great start. DH and I are about to get goi...

Re: Another one from the UK

I don't think that I'm the only one to be feeling rather nervous at this stage. Checking and double checking the figures and feeling altogether very strange. Too good to be true?

Re: Another one from the UK

Hello 1taskaday, Just over 3 months to go. Before I discovered the ERE world I thought I was giving up one very full time job for a smaller workload and more autonomy. Now I realise that with a bit of frugal thinking I can swop for not needing an income other than pension. So a whole other level of ...

Re: Another one from the UK

@ GandK On the plus side there is not usually a problem on deciding where we want to go on holiday or leaving each other in peace to read a book, etc. That might be a problem at your house? On the downside we could be a little 'uni-mind'? On a recent weekend crafts course I was told that my son and ...

Another one from the UK

Hi, I'd like to introduce myself. I will start in the traditional way by saying that I have been reading your posts for weeks and have learned lots from these forums, the wiki and the book. I've adopted the name saving-10-years - which I now realise is a little ambiguous. I am very near to taking re...

Re: Cheap date ideas?

If you can cook then inviting a girl to a home cooked meal could be deeply impressive and not too expensive. At least I was always impressed when a guy offered to cook for me. If it was edible and did not require boil-in-bag technology then that was a BIG bonus. This could have the advantage of a re...
