Re: Couples Trouble and ERE
In our case:
1) We never worried about money or job loss during the great recession.
2) We're about to buy our first house in cash.
3) Both of us can now transition in and out of the job market at will.
This.
You craft your own lifestyle together that has near infinite flexibility as to ...

Re: Couples Trouble and ERE
I've been fortunate to have my wife on board with ER since the beginning. We both came from pretty humble homes (she immigrated here at age 7, my parents "left the farm" and bootstrapped themselves into college eventually). I can't imagine hitting ER at 33 with the friction of a spendy spouse or ...

Re: Convince me that I should have children.
I guess it depends on the disease or defect or disability that besets the kids of Couple B in your example. I imagine even those born with significant defects (spina bifida, Down Syndrome, cystic fibrosis, etc) would prefer to exist with their defect than to not exist at all.

Re: Convince me that I should have children.
I'll toss out a few random thoughts. Today is my oldest daughter's 9th birthday, which marks the half way point on her journey to adulthood. Bittersweet. The bitter is that half her time living with us (as a child) is gone. Sweet because she's transformed from a pee/poop/eat machine that cried all ...

Re: How do you decide when to splurge?
We have a retirement budget that includes line items for specific discretionary spending. Travel and toys/entertainment/fun are two that come to mind. Travel is about $5k/yr (out of a $32k/yr budget) and toys/entertainment/fun is about $1000/yr.

Great, 7-figure in 9 years time.....you did something really good or had some sponsoring :-) I still need to figure out this dividend payouts. At least, I will put more and more in balanced low-cost Index funds, but i have not figured out how to get a nice dividend payout.

Re: Henk's journey thru life
Amazing indeed, it took me 21 years, but luckily 15 years of that by living in every region of the world.

Re: Is Atlas Shrugged Worth the Long Read?
I liked the book a lot. I'd say I'm a pragmatic libertarian that identifies slightly more closely with the mindset of the left than the right (although I have never voted democrat in a presidential election - libertarian x1 and repub x2).

He RootofGood, wow, 33 in ERE mode, that proves again how fast the new generation is. When I was 33, I just started to explore the world by work/travel, and certainly I was not so mature and aware as you are on that age, so I am impressed. I will start reading your blog as well.

Re: Henk's journey thru life
Hey RootofGood: I like your blog. I'm not sure whether MrMoneyMustache (for example) ever talked about possible dangers of retiring early (... except perhaps: "Arrr! Get over yourself, wussy! Grow a Mustache!"). I like his blog, too, by the way; but his persona has little patience with people who ...
