Looking forward to read your progress. Being FIRE’d has exceeded my expectations so it’s worth the effort. What are your post FIRE plans? Planning/researching my post FIRE life helped me through the daily grind.

Re: ERE housing approaches in Chicago?

When I was serious about FIRE, I lived in Albany park/ravenswood area off the Rockwell brown line stop. Rent was $600 back in 2012, good ethnic restaurants and and was able to get a single seat on the brown line during rush hour. Biking to downtown wasn’t bad with streets with bike paths Off the red...

February 2019 In Thailand Feb expenses = $1838 2019 Average Monthly= 2294 Net worth is back up to the balance I had when I quit back in September. It’s a relief but trying not to pay too much attention. A friend visited me for 2 weeks in February and we did a lot of touristy things and guided tours...

January 2019 In Thailand Expenses $2749 One month in Chiang Mai, the expenses came in higher than planned. Still in vacation mode and not in expat/retirement mode. It’s been a difficult mindeset to let go of, I haven’t travelled much before and now I want to do and see everything. Currently in Bang...

Re: Taemoo's Journal

Do you have a withdrawal system in place? Or is your SWR so low, that it doesn't matter? SWR is a work in progress, target number was 4% at 30k a year. The challenge was that I didn’t know how much travelling 9 months of the year would cost so I’m finding out as I go. I picked 30k based on Millenia...

Re: Taemoo's Journal

Hi Taemoo, how are you doing? Have you already FIRE'ed and hiked the AT? Happy New Year! I haven’t posted in a while. I did pull the plug and quit my job back in September after many sleepless nights. Probably was the worst decision financially because we went into bear market territory since then ...

Re: Fasting Can Regenerate Your Immune System

I've been trying fasting since the new year and feeling really good about it. Tried a 7 day, 2 day and a 3 day. I come out of the fast into intermittent fasting/keto, getting great results on weight loss. Probably do a 3 day fast once a month going forward until goal weight. I break the fast primari...

Awesome progress, looks like you will meet your FI goals much earlier than 6-8 years.

I had similar wins with net worth increase but also fails in reducing expenses and losing weight. Good luck to you in the new year! Where did the spreadsheet go?

Re: New (US) tax plan

If we're only getting say $5k in investment income from our taxable accounts, with lotwe can convert $24k-$5k = $19k of traditional IRA funds to Roth IRA for the year tax free. If the 5k investment income is from dividends or capital gains and you plan to be in the 10% bracket, couldn't you convert...

Re: Dealing with Greed

why not put $1,000 into crypto? if it goes to shit not that much lost, and it would likely take care of the FOMO. of course this should be a small % of total portfolio, because speculation. I'm definitely going through FOMO, obsessively following the news and prices. I don't know why I can blow 2 g...

Re: neemap journal on the path to FI. Here are my numbers.

I predict my monthly cash flow from the rentals will be $12.5 - 15k once the entire loan is paid off. This is when I plan to retire. Your cash flow is going to be amazing once you reach your goals, it's pretty amazing now. Pain is no fun, hope you get to a place where it can be managed. I witnessed...

Thanks for the recommendation, I will check it out. I need some work in forming my withdrawal strategy and currently in research phase. Fortunately I'm in a great situation where I can withdrawal 2% and still have a very comfortable life. My biggest preparation for the AT hike will be to lose 25 pou...

Re: Blog from Malaysia

Malaysia sounds like a great place for geo-arbitrage. Although more expensive than some other areas in the region it has a lot of stuff going for it. I wish the MM2H didn't have the income requirement, only way I can get it is to apply for it while I'm working. But I'm not well traveled so I would l...

Those are great prices! When I FIRE, I hope to spend time in Chiang Mai from Oct - Mar and I'm budgeting around 500/mo for accommodations in the Nimman area but sounds like I don't have to go that high.

I'm also planning to quit next year and travel outside of the US. My plans for insurance is Cobra(450/mo) up to 10/1, then 3 months temp insurance until 1/1. When ACA open enrollment comes around in nov, I will get a silver plan. If premium subsidies are still in place, cost will be zero if my proje...

Re: Commiting to a Year vs Flying Free

I went abroad to learn a language for a year. Instead of a yearly financial commitment, I paid per quarter. It was more but it gave me more freedom. I ended up taking one of the quarters off so it worked out better for me. But if I got a ~22% discount, I would probably go for the year. Especially if...
