Re: A Journey of Mindfulness--the Remaking of Life in Midstream.

I can relate to the parent and food thing. My mom’s in a nursing home and hates the food. The food isn’t quite as bad as she thinks it is, but her tastes have changed and some dementia is creeping in. She’s 87 years old, and she asks me for certain things—the latest things are ketchup (like, has use...

Re: Too Old To Retire "Young"

Sitting here on my back porch, realizing I probably have “one more year to comfort” syndrome. Or something. All indications are that it’s time to pull the plug. Not this minute, but maybe July 2024. But realistically still on track for June or July 2025. I just had a birthday—turned 59—and lately am...

Re: Too Old To Retire "Young"

Hey there! Can’t believe it’s been more than a year since I checked in. I’d love to be able to say “so much has happened!” but…. It really hasn’t. Firming up my plans to really retire. Right now it’s looking like June 2025. I’ll definitely be too old to retire young then (I will be 60. How is that e...

Re: Vasectomy? Child-free life?

However, there has been research indicating that excessive masturbation in forward facing position may inhibit ability to ejaculate in other positions such as standard missionary.
This. Explains. So. Much.

Thank you!!

Re: Too Old To Retire "Young"

Good advice, to have an adventure! I decided my last post was pretty sad, so I booked a vacation to a coastal resort for June. No better cure for the blahs than sun, surf and margaritas. I booked the dogs’ kennel today, too (usually I wait til the last minute and it’s booked up) so no excuses there....

Re: Too Old To Retire "Young"

Hello, all. I just realized how long it’s been since I posted. Why so long, you ask? Wish I knew. Life, man. Lately life has just been Groundhog Day on infinite repeat. I suspect I’ve been a little depressed. Life has consisted lately of slogging at work, fixing dinner for my mom and schlepping it t...

Re: No Cook, No Refrigeration, Long Storage Foods

Nuts can go rancid over time—anything with oils can go bad. Nuts may not last longer than about a year. Things with oils can go bad sooner—like brown rice will get rancid before white rice, oats as well (I think rolled oats last longer than steel cut—rolled oats are steamed and dried). Good resource...

Oh, thank you—I am! I just had a big post with plans and detailed numbers, and then I thought better of putting actual numbers out there. I may modify and repost soon.

Thanks for worrying about me! 😁

Re: Solved Problems

With the right amount of social capital, the price of home furnishings reduces to zero. That's what I consider the problem "solved" It may be that just viewing the world around you as a series of problems to be solved as a limiting perspective . I suppose. Maybe it’s “potato, po-tah-to.” ...

Re: Solved Problems

I think some of us are always looking for problems to solve. We’re wired that way, or maybe trained that way. I see that in myself: “problem solved. Where’s the next one?” Too bad it’s not a cure for cancer and moving on to global warming….. It’s a characteristic I have that both complements my DBF ...

Re: Too Old To Retire "Young"

“And at my back I always hear time’s winged chariot hurrying near.” Feeling lately how quickly time is passing….. thinking I’m getting a tad closer to pulling the plug. I’ve ruminated a lot lately since my last entry about what I wrote about thinking I needed to work, to do something that resembles ...

Re: Foraging Log

I picked wild blackberries last weekend, enough for a pie. Will probably head out again Sunday for more. We had a lot of rain this year, so the berries are really nice.

Mushrooms scare me. The only ones I can identify as safe are morels and they are RARE!

Wow... this thread took a turn. I haven't been reading the boards as much lately, but it's interesting that some other conversations are referred to here. I'm not all that into the whole--I'm going to call it the "Uber-philosophy" behind ERE, although I find much of it interesting and some...

Re: Semi-retirement locations?

Tennessee would fit the bill nicely, even if you moved to more expensive Nashville. DBF just bought a studio condo in downtown Memphis with a kick-ass view of the river for $120K. I was comparing what a bargain it was to Nashville, where I found a similar one--a little bigger--for about $380K. Tenne...

A Jacob Mention

Not sure if this is a rerun--Marketwatch often reruns/re-dates their columns--but I don't recall reading this before. Jacob is mentioned as "One blogger claims to have lived on $7,000 a year or less for a decade. Another says his family of five lives on $40,000 a year and spent just $296 on gro...
