Re: Single pair of shoes

Well if running on concrete is an absolute must and you want to spend big for a shoe that will last 20+ years then I think the only place to get lifetime quality sneakers that are hand welted and built with high quality leather is probably Viberg out of Canada. Similar build profile to PNW boots and...

Re: The Listening Society

Hanzi Freinacht is two people. Daniel Gortz and Emil Ejner Friis. Primarily Gortz. Gortz is a Swede and Friis a Dane I believe. They're open to being contacted on social media. Wouldn't be surprised if Gortz showed up if Jacob and others wanted to engage him directly here after reading the books.

Jacob you are great at discussing this stuff. I've been in the online circles that led to Stoa since 2016 and always thought you would be a great addition to the conversation. I've heard bullet point 2 above referred to as "Scaffolding". Have you talked with the Consilience Project? You're...

Re: Retrofitting Community

Yup Dave Wilson Nurseries has a bunch of good content on backyard orcharding. Just keep in mind they're in California which is like the Garden of Eden for fruit tree growing whereas the humid mid-atlantic is somewhere near the 5th Circle of Hell :D

Re: Retrofitting Community

Do you find that the pest pressure is lower in an urban environment? That’s the assumption I’ve been operating under since I figure insect populations are probably lower in concrete jungle than massive farm plots surrounded by woodland. I would think so....but you will also have lower predator popu...

Re: Retrofitting Community

@POI Thanks for the rundown! Do you have to use netting or anything to keep the birds and squirrels from eating all of your berry harvest? I’m still in the research phase for dwarf fruit trees but I know they will be in containers. I’m looking for a staggered harvest, so right now things like peach...

Re: Retrofitting Community

What berries have worked well for you in zone 7? I grow goumi, honeyberry, black currant, elderberry, aronia and muscadine grape. These all require 0 inputs after planting, are well adapted to our humid sub tropics, extremely resistant to pests and disease, and produce well. I don't spray because i...

Re: Making wine

I'm going to have a decent sized berry harvest this year. Muscadine grapes, honeyberries, goumi, aronia, currants, elderberry flowers. Will be consulting this thread.

You're giving me ideas for a semi-ERE source of income once I leave the military. Although I can't stand the Millenial Vet Bro crowd and probably could never do that.

This is exactly the vibe I got after reading his blog. Millennial Vet Bro who is gearing up to monetize the Permanent Portfolio advice through subscriptions from the whole Jocko listening crowd. Historical investment literacy for the Black Rifle Coffee set. It's a niche! Not sure if it's a niche tha...

Re: Retrofitting Community

Partial shade tolerant berry bushes like black currant, honeyberry, goumi might offer more utility than a dwarf fruit tree on a micro urban lot in Philly. Especially if your postage stamp yard backs up to a shady alley. There are no common fruit trees that will give you a substantial harvest with on...

Re: Electric Vehicles

I went gas when I bought in 2018 after months of trying to find an EV/hybrid that I could make work with my financial situation. I really wanted a Prius V but they hold their value so tightly used. Pretty happy with my buy though. I drove this 2018 Honda Civic from Baltimore to Nashville last summer...

Nice boots!

I scored a pair of very lightly used White's Smoke Jumpers for $90 off of eBay a couple years ago. $530 retail price. They are absolute units. 8oz leather.

On the topic of food...my wife and I have been eating flexitarian and doing almost all of the shopping at Aldi. We grab a few extra veggies elsewhere. Ground turkey, red cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, and chickpeas do the heavy lifting for us. Stopped 90% of red meat consumption a couple year...

Would love to have you and Hristo down 295. I was in Baltimore City in 00's through '14. Spent many of those years dreaming about doing what you tried. Grew up in one of those old inner street car suburbs Hristo talked about. They had names like "Gardenville" and "Parkville" aro...

Old brick rowhome cites like Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Richmond. End of row houses can have pretty generous yards. I lived in a neighborhood in Baltimore called Hampden and had a few neighbors who gardened intensively and raised chickens.
