Re: What should I watch out for/how to go about opening investment accounts in the US? [German national/US passport]
Thanks for the replies everyone. I've held off on opening an account for the moment until I get a better idea of how to properly diversify, in my own name. HSBC Expat looks interesting, but I get the impression they're catering to the 1M+$ crowd.

Re: What should I watch out for/how to go about opening investment accounts in the US? [German national/US passport]
We're currently not thinking about any major sums (think < 10k), only enough to get started by having the actual account(s) and shifting stuff inside them. In that scenario, it's her money and we have an informal agreement that I invested "x" in that. I give her x*current_exchange_rate € i...

Schwab gives you a checking account along with a brokerage account. It includes a debit card with no cost ATM withdrawals anywhere in the world. I would try to open a Schwab account, but you may need a US address to do so. She has a US address. Basically her grandmother's address, who still lives t...

What should I watch out for/how to go about opening investment accounts in the US? [German national/US passport]
My DG holds a US passwort (in addition to her German one) and we have been thinking about using that to diversify somewhat by opening account(s) in the US. There's three components here: (1) diversify by having investments/cash outside Germany, indeed outside of the EU (2) have access to some funds ...

Re: Looking for resources on applied system thinking
The Weinberg book has a newer edition ("silver anniversary") which unfortunately seems to only exist in paperback form. As far as I can tell from the preface, the only changes seem to concern "sexist language" which was "changed in as many places as I could find". Any p...

Re: Cannot get myself to invest money for "fear" of mistakes
@Chris: The cashflow focus occured to me before, but I thought to myself "buying x rate of cash flow at lower prices would be better than at buying it at higher prices, right"? @radamfi: I had a quick look and it appears there are least some European platforms that are open to Germans (som...

Re: Cannot get myself to invest money for "fear" of mistakes
Thanks for the quick replies everyone! @cmonkey: Good tip about the baby steps. The thought of investing tens of Ks at a time can be a bit disconcerting. By well-known brands do you mean blue chips and the likes? One more aspect about "analysis paralysis": jacob has, on a few occasions, hi...

Cannot get myself to invest money for "fear" of mistakes
I'm having real trouble getting myself to actually invest my money, i.e. getting past some psychological barriers. This bothers me because it's the next step required to generate cash flow and I currently obviously suck at it. My current savings rate is just shy of 70% and is mostly held back by the...

Re: Men's rights movement - opinions
Alright Stahlmann, you're right: back on topic. I do believe "the system" and "people" to be pro-women and biased against men. However, most men I've known to have real trouble with this - in the sense that they ended up having actual emotional distress, legal issues or similar -...

Re: Men's rights movement - opinions
@ Stahlmann I do agree with your premise that there is an overly developed sense of entitlement among women as to what they "deserve" and "won't settler for". As far as I can see this is in part because of the MSM spreading a specific image of what romance, courtship and marriage...

Re: Men's rights movement - opinions
The problem is women set so high standards that there is no entry for many men. There are no ,,virgin neckbeard women who live in parents' basement". Now you can see how gender stereotypes affects men too. Or there are many men who opt out due to the fact they see no benefits in relationship w...

I don't believe that these alpha males exist. What constitutes the alpha male. The big tough fighter. The smart guy. The rich guy. It's a stupid concept. People are complex and go for people that appeal to them. The Alpha male concept is just another stupid load of crap some moron came up with. Dif...

Re: DIY take-apart pullup stand
Definitely looks more professional than mine. How fast can you take it apart/put it together? My living room being my only room, I really do have to take it apart after each use, so being able to do that in under one minute was a requirement.

Re: DIY take-apart pullup stand
Here you go. I didn't get too many in. The first idea was to integrate them into the burpee routine, but I'm currently at 8x12 burpees, and being totally untrained pullup-wise I only managed to do the two first sets complete with pullups, then I gave up halfway through the third and just did the pus...

Re: DIY take-apart pullup stand
I ended up going for the iron pipes. Everything else involved doorframes or bolting something to the plaster ceiling, and I wasn't willing to deal with the landlord concerning potential damage. Sturdy, folds up, can be potentially disassembled for transport into a bunch of pipes no longer than 1 m a...

I think that was excluded by "independent" source of income (for a moment I was wondering that myself...)BeyondtheWrap wrote: Interesting, so someone who FIRE'd on their investment income and no longer works would get the same score as a non-ERE-minded person who relies on a job for income.

Re: ERE indicator
Happiness tends to be hard to measure. Perhaps measuring what proportion of your time you are MADE to devote to something you would otherwise not do would be helpful here. E.g. someone who's stuck in the office 40 hours per week plus the additional 10 hours of commute would rate lower than someone w...

Re: Late Retirement Extreme? Early Lifestyle Extreme?
I've found that to people like the author of the OP's article, what he's doing feels like becoming an atheist, i.e. I've seen the light, chasing possessions is bad, experiences last forever, etc. What it is is just embracing a different god. It's a concept I've found very difficult to get across to ...

Re: Trumple down economics vs. entitlement state
Do German businesses receive some kind of government subsidy for employing women who take maternity leave? From the POV of a business owner, it should dissuade the hiring of reproductive age women. Yet I never hear about this from socialist European countries. http://national.deseretnews.com/articl...
