Re: Bitcoin on the rise

Is mining BTC still feasible for an individual?

I did a little mining a few years ago with a couple graphics cards, but it looks like that's not workable anymore.

Re: Running the furnace fan from a generator

So looks like I'll just pay an electrician to install a transfer switch (sounded like it would be ~$300) and pick-up a high-quality Honda inverter generator. The total cost will be about $2,500 but would provide heat and basic requirements. I will be using some credit card points for Home Depot gift...

Re: Investments Trade Log

Are the main drawbacks with the muni CEFs (vs a Vanguard ETF) just the leverage and higher fees?

Re: Running the furnace fan from a generator

I would be interested to know what generator setup you chose, if you go that route.

Re: What do ERE-ers pay for health insurance in 2016?

We're paying ~12k/year for a family of four with no subsidy qualifications and a 7k deductible!

If the income goes away, that drops by 50% plus the deductible drops to 1k.

We're still not getting below 600kwh/month - but we are mostly home all day, and cook most meals on the electric stove, etc.

Re: ERE indicator

I think your indicator makes sense, though some might try to argue for counting each asset class separately with regards to the portfolio, but I think you're right to count it as one because of the high levels of correlation. So REITs you wouldn't break out separate, but an apartment building you wo...

Re: Push me to pull the trigger on a more conservative asset allocation?

Have you looked at Portfolio Charts? You need an allocation you have some degree of faith in, and wont bail on even in a large drawdown. Ultimately it's about your own psychology and ability to stick to a plan. If you're sticking to passive allocation strategies, most of them don't vary too much in ...

For all your Tesla dreams

Looks like they have ~50% depreciation in 3 years based on the used asking prices and assuming the received trade-in value was even lower.

Re: Electric Car

I don't know, you can get a used Nissan Leaf for that same "bottom line" price and it's a real car, whereas it looks like people online are referring to the I-MIEV as a "glorified golf cart" http://www.consumerreports.org/video/view/cars/auto-test-track/2094014972001/mitsubishi-i...

ICE Cars = Not cool
Tesla = Cool kid. You're better than everyone else, and make rainbows instead of exhaust fumes - and you get to look good and go fast while doing so.

Because personality is largely determined by genetics (see twin studies), if everyone "responsible" adopted other people's children instead of having their own, it would leave nothing but the irresponsible reproducing. Which explains why I'm so irresponsible, my Grandma was adopted ;-D I t...

Re: Tesla Cars

The Leaf looks like a good deal. The 2011's are going at auction for closer to 5k. Even the 2015's with better battery packs and almost new are going for less than 13k. They're much easier to justify purchasing depending on annual fuel costs (then again, you could just live closer to work and ride a...
