Re: Outlive: The Science & Art of Longevity

I'm curious what members of the forum have done with regard to getting the measurements of the markers mentioned in this thread? Are people asking for specific tests from their G.P., and are the tests being covered by insurance? If not, what are the costs? Or are there at home tests people are usin...

Re: Outlive: The Science & Art of Longevity

Just wanted to chime in as another voice saying this is an awesome book. A lot of good information.

If you're on the fence about buying it, you should buy it. Much better written and full of practical advice with detailed reasoning and studies than I expected.

Re: Subsidized Internet - $30 off per month

How much will it be after the credit?

The normal rate for my internet plan is only 20 dollars/month.

Would this mean I pay 0 dollars after the credit?

Re: How to save on food ?

I used to work at mcdonalds. They would give us one free meal per shift. But they would let us make the meal ourselves. sooo.. I would make a big mac, but use 2-3 pieces of quarter pound beef, plus 3-4 slices of cheese, plus all the other things. Then I would grab the largest fry available and a lar...

Re: Spend dividends or reinvest?

I view dividends the same as any other income.

If there is something I want to spend it on, I spend it...anything extra I don't need at the end of the month / quarter gets invested or saved by default.

The trades are free so...

Re: Furniture Free Living

I did this for a while at first. Sleeping and eating on the floor is actually pretty easy and comfortable. Over time, other people gave me old furniture they did not want...dressers, tables, book shelves, computer desks, tv stands, couches, beds...now my 5 bedroom house is fully furnished and I did ...

4 years ago I had the same job, same boss, same spouse, same house, same car, and was hanging out on the same ere forums.

Nothing has changed except I am now a little older, a little richer, and have more gray hair...

Re: Deliberately coasting to FI?

What if the work doesn't pay enough and requires you to draw down? What if there's a lost decade of investment returns? I assume one would then do what my poor Aunt does whenever she needs more money - spend the weekends working as a waiter/waitress at the local fancy restaurant until you have enou...

Re: Deliberately coasting to FI?

Coasting to FI seems pretty ideal to me, honestly, especially if one still has the urge to be productive. Work a couple days a week, take a week off a month, etc. The bigger question for me is what is an ideal coast to fi job, that has flexible hours? Maybe like a remote software dev job, where you ...

Re: ERE1 vs ERE2, forum culture

Eh - I don't think this is a cult. If this were a cult dear leader would have already bought 80 acres of prime timberland in Michigan and started hosting retreats and workshops for the purpose of learning various skills like gardening, woodworking, hunting, welding, canning, how to butcher a cow, co...

Re: Fish's Enlightenment

As someone with a wife and four kids I would also love to see an update. I can certainly relate to some of what you have written - especially the lack of time during infant / toddler stages and amount of money spent to raise a family and spending differences between my wife and I. This can all make ...

Re: Just for fun: What is the oldest thing you own that you use daily?

My wallet was a gift someone gave me 25 years ago. I've been carrying it around daily ever since then.

I have received two more wallets since then which are brand new. I think I'm set for life for wallets and I have never even bought one. :D

@Fish Yes - that is what I'm referring to, among other posts that have since been deleted. I've been on these forums for 12 years now, and I haven't noticed this level of flame baiting and frustrations before...maybe they always existed and I have missed them in the past. Re: ERE1 vs ERE2, forum culture

Yeah - I mean - I don't completely understand what the big deal is exactly. People will talk about what they feel like talking about, and many fields have their own terminology. esp. STEM, medical fields, etc. This is not uncommon. My bigger concern these days is the ongoing existence of the forum i...

Re: ERE1 vs ERE2, forum culture

For many, there isn't a difference between ere 1 and 2 in the sense that many people aren't like us virulent recluses and already live as part of families and communities. For them the two evolve together. My mind goes to @M as an example, though I'm sure he's not the only one: he's pursuing ERE an...

Re: Make Stuff Log

Biofeedback might help. I was a hobby of mine during my 20s. I started focusing on one finger. When I put all my concentration on that finger, it would start tingling after a while. Next step was to do this with different fingers. Next step was to move the tingling from one finger to the next and b...

Re: How to read the news

hmm..I use google news. I'm not sure if I like the idea of simply not reading the news at all...although I could see the appeal of that. I just wish there were some way to filter out the news to only read about what I'm interested in reading about...which is mostly just business, economics, and new ...

As much as I love the idea of fusion, I have slowly accepted the idea of solar panels and sodium ion batteries as my eventual fate.
