Re: COVID-19

@Augustus That is interesting. I ask because I work as a software engineer for a large multi billion dollar international corporation. Our customers are mostly government, banks, and law firms so we have similar clients. So some things seem similar.... Does your company provide contract software dev...

Re: COVID-19

@Augustus

I am genuinely curious about the details of your business. Do you see revenue and customers coming back after pandemic for example? What product/service do you sell? Do you have a wide variety of customers? How much has revenue dropped? thanks for any insight.

Re: COVID-19

I'm not a doctor, but it almost seems like most of the risk factors outside of age are also correlated with high levels of general inflammation in the body. I read somewhere that most people die due to immune system overreacting in the lungs...This would also explain why being immune suppressed isn'...

Surprised no one has brought this up yet. The results of yet more antibody tests. This time in New york. In the article they estimate 0.5% fatality rate.

Re: M's Journal

Quick financial update:

800K in invested assets, plus 140k main house = 940K networth.

Have a little over 500k in taxable investments. The rest in ira/401k/hsa.

Expenses are still pretty much the same as before.

Re: Estimating Healthcare Costs in America

@IlliniDave This is a good observation, and also the main reason why I generally choose one of the cheapest plans available. Unfortunately the cheapest bronze family plan in my area is still over $1,000 /month. @Frx Wow - good advice. My parents lifestyle was drastically different from my own. Neith...

Re: Estimating Healthcare Costs in America

@FRx I'm classically trained as an engineer, not a doctor, so I'm not sure how the best way of determining if someone is genuinely healthy or not. It seems to me that using a really high deductible short term health insurance plan combined with a direct care model may be risky financially, unless on...

Re: Estimating Healthcare Costs in America

@Augustus: Yes I'm a US citizen. I pay over $1,000 /month for family health insurance currently. This is the cheapest plan available where I live, and we're all young and healthy so we don't actually use it all that much. I'm surprised you only pay $800 /month. Seems pretty cheap to me. Perhaps I sh...

Re: Estimating Healthcare Costs in America

Hello Everyone! A lot of very good replies here. It looks like I'm not the only one who has thought about this question for a while. I'm beginning to think of my budget for healthcare in the same way I think about the early retirement goal itself, just on different scales. This is just another risk ...

Estimating Healthcare Costs in America

So I'm stuck in analysis paralysis land. I live in a Medicaid expansion state with a wife and three young kids. Early thirties, everyone is fairly healthy. I just finished adding up our spending for last year and it totaled ~$20,600. This is for everything EXCLUDING healthcare. We own our own house ...

Re: M's Journal

@farm_or lol at the neighbor. Many people think we are poor as well...and I never bother to correct them either because I dont want to sound like one of those egotistical snobs, etc. A "rich" person made fun of me once because i am "poor" because of how small my house is. I later found out that I bo...

Re: M's Journal

@Josue I have done a variety of software development over the years, but my focus is .NET development. I'm actually in the bottom 10% in terms of pay where I work, and I live in a low COL area where developers are not paid as well as they are in California, New York, etc. I could definitely do bette...

Re: M's Journal

Hmm...So it's been a year now. I guess I should provide a more useful update instead of more ranting about nonsense, lol. I really suck at maintaining a journal. I bought a new house this year. A 2,800 square foot McMansion, in cash. I know this will derail my ERE (ER?) goals quite a bit, but this w...

Re: What's the point of carpets & vacuum cleaners?

All things being equal I prefer carpet because it's warmer when you walk on it barefoot in the winter time and it doesn't hurt as much if you fall. Also if you drop something fragile onto carpet it's less likely to break than, say, tile. But taking into account maintenance and economics I prefer har...

Re: Tips for sleeping in a cold room?

After rereading my post I should probably mention that the whole reason I heat the whole house and cool the whole house is because it's a very small house and I have a wife and two children. When you have children the last thing you want is them explaining to the teacher how it's 40 degrees INSIDE o...

Re: M's Journal

I guess I should update this journal every now and then. :-P So I've been spending a lot of money over the past few months. My taxable investments have only increased to around 310K and my 401k is now around 20k or so. Everything else is mostly the same. I've been thinking a lot lately about WHY peo...

Re: Tips for sleeping in a cold room?

Californians! Don't turn down the heat! Learn from the people of the North! Currently it is 10 degrees outside where I live with a 0 degree wind chill. My house is 78 degrees inside. My entire house is heated by three space heaters on low ~1500-2000 watts total when they are all on. This is the most...
