Re: Long Now's Manual for Civilization

We will be publishing the list in the coming months once we have the suggestions narrowed down by our members and supporters. We have reached about 1400 nominations but will need four to five thousand to have enough to winnow it down to the very best 3000 books. So… If you were stranded on an islan...

Re: Meetup in Bielefeld, Germany

Haha - almost. At least you were right in terms of similar latitudes. For clarification, here's a map. By central, I meant it is roughly in the middle between Amsterdam and Berlin, Hamburg and Frankfurt: https://preview.ibb.co/mqXtGx/Bielefeld.jpg Also, there are cheaper busses from all over Europe ...

Meetup in Bielefeld, Germany

A friend of mine recently coined Bielefeld as small Berlin of the West (as in West Germany). While that might be somewhat of an overstatement, Bielefeld should be - big enough to be accessible, - small enough to be a little more inexpensive than bigger alternatives and - central enough to be reachab...

Re: How to maintain continuous improvement while not burning out?

1) Make a list of your 15 most important goals. To spare you the counting, you currently have 13, excluding your joker card of "everything else that is already postponed to retirement". 13 is fine. Why? You will see in step 2 ;) 2) Cut off the bottom 10 (they can come later or become a pri...

Re: akratic's ERE journal

Thank you very much for sharing! Awesome and elaborate post as ususal. Congrats on the newborn! Right off the bat, I see at least three aspects: 1) Lack of healthy moderation 2) Lack of structure (daily schedule with balance) 3) Lack of a relatable group of people ("I spent the last 21 days str...

Re: Eliminating Facebook from our lives?

Other ways to create barriers is to block the website through ad blockers, your provider or else. Whatever the barrier, it makes sense to create roadblocks that give you time to reconsider your action when you (or rather your roadblocks make you) catch yourself red-handed on your way to the social m...

Re: Travelhack-List

Just to add to my last post: I just stumbled upon this madfientist podcast with Brad and Alexi from Travel Miles 101 . It might be interesting to some with sufficient time and fun to work out travel hacks. Travel Miles 101 also offers a free course . I haven't tried it myself, just wanted to share a...

Re: SWB's path to financial independence

I used to focus on building career capital , but if you know your specific goal, you can probably find a more narrow path that is more relevant to your aspirations. From skimming your pros and cons I would say the new offer is not a good personal match (not your hot area, doubt over mid-/long-term s...

Re: Entering Ketosis

I am not sure. I thought I got Jacob's metaphor (and the pun) but I am not sure I got 7W's argument. Jacob's metaphor: I projected the metaphor on the vegetarians/vegans vs. carnist debate. Just like BRUTE dropping a carnist argument and suddenly vegetarians/vegans rise up (very broadly speaking). (...

Re: SWR milestone record - Most important factors? / Recap of the progress towards ERE

So, not surprisingly, reducing expenses initially has the highest impact and the importance of non-investment income is gradually replaced by investment income, with the caveat that input factors that you can control beat those that you can control less.

Re: How to turn "high savings rate" into a daily habit

@jacob: Unfortunately, that doesn't really apply to me, as I am not a big spender on "miscellaneous stuff" anyway. But that makes me realize that my problem lies in the bigger recurring expenses as Gilberto points out. @7W: That approach sounds very ymoyl'esque. It would be nice to have a ...

Re: Travelhack-List

Do geo-arbitrage: check what products and services are cheaper at your destination and plan for it (1.5 dollar haircuts in Thailand are not that shabby, actually). This includes the process from getting there to getting back, starting with, but not limited to, where to exchange your currency and end...

SWR milestone record - Most important factors? / Recap of the progress towards ERE

The SWR milestone record thread started on Fri, 27 Jul 2012. The mutual understanding of the save withdrawal rate (SWR) should be something like: Average monthly expenses * 12 / FI Assets = SWR I am in awe by you fellow ERE-ers' progress! True, the market has increased by about +100% since mid 2012 ...

How to turn "high savings rate" into a daily habit

I am currently extreme-izing my daily habits by setting up a weekly schedule with daily tasks (extreme-izing both the goals and the tracking). Early financial independence ranks high in my overall web of goals. And as such, the monthly savings rate trailing twelve months is one of my personal KPIs I...
