Re: Helping kid launch?

When I graduated HS I did everything I could to leave my parents place, such that I picked a university in another city altogether. In retrospect I would have been far better served by staying at my parents and attending the local college for the first year, before transferring to a better universit...

Re: Do you farm? Permaculture? Do you pasture raise livestock? Do you build your own tiny or eco house?

@Alphaville I started looking at what it would take to do pasture-raised meat rabbits, seems like a great way to get started experiencing what it takes for raising livestock. Could start with a couple does and a buck and see how it goes. Thanks for the tip. @7Wannabe5 Very good points about Observat...

Re: Do you farm? Permaculture? Do you pasture raise livestock? Do you build your own tiny or eco house?

i like solving problems, and i like getting help solving problems, but this thread seems to me more like idle speculation about vague unrealized notions than actual work on something. My preferred thread format is one where the thread isn't about the OP but about the topic. That didn't really happe...

Re: Do you farm? Permaculture? Do you pasture raise livestock? Do you build your own tiny or eco house?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IqAj_m-RG-A I was just watching this and shortly after 12:30 minutes Paul Wheaton says that a hundred pounds of food were harvested from a 2 year old berm, which is mainly composed of poor sandy dirt, and never irrigated (except probably at the very beginning). Does t...

Re: Do you farm? Permaculture? Do you pasture raise livestock? Do you build your own tiny or eco house?

The pig raising and rotation of paddocks with Joel Salantin's system seems interesting. The pigs are trained to respect a simple electric wire (you have to get them early, weaners might be too old by then?), and they are rotated every 5 to 12 days. Apparently someone does check on them every day and...

Re: Do you farm? Permaculture? Do you pasture raise livestock? Do you build your own tiny or eco house?

Good points about the work involved. Hopefully there's room for the lazy farmers that can find creative solutions to reduce the overall person-hours required to keep a farm going. Especially after the startup work involved. Could possibly create some weird limits and constraints and then try to solv...

some people who’ve been there haven’t liked it, but i wouldn’t universalize their particular experience.
I'm not super familiar with the permies forum, is there a good spot to see the negative reviews?

I get the sense it definitely caters to people that are willing to work hard.

Yeah I found https://www.workaway.info also and I see some permaculture farms in my areas, definitely worth spending some time trying it out. Paul Wheaton also has a bootcamp in Missoula, Montana which could be cool to check out sometime.

Re: Do you farm? Permaculture? Do you pasture raise livestock? Do you build your own tiny or eco house?

Yeah cows seem like a whole 'nother level of effort. Pigs at least seems easier (and possibly profitable) based on what I've seen from youtube about Joel Salntin's approach. Maybe for dairy I'd just stick with goats. About famines that's true, but permaculture is all about regenerating the land and ...

Do you farm? Permaculture? Do you pasture raise livestock? Do you build your own tiny or eco house?

Does anyone here have land large enough to feed their families 90-100%? Does anyone raise livestock? Does anyone build weird houses like wofati, oehler's earth structure, or cob houses, straw bale houses? I originally found out about Permaculture through this forum, so thanks a ton for that. I've al...

Re: Where to move

How about considering farming, like permaculture or pasture raised livestock.. That could influence where you want to be. For example Paul Wheaton prefers west Montana to many other states because it has 4 seasons and that's a benefit to his farming.

Re: Do you personally drink coffee and why/why not?

For most of my 20's and early 30's I had a couple of associations in my head: 1) The main purpose to drink coffee is to acquire caffeine (and thus be stimulated/wide awake!) 2) Decaf is for the weak, is dumb, is crap. .. But when I realized the caffeine was interfering with my work, I was forced to ...

Re: Do you personally drink coffee and why/why not?

I've never really been much of a coffee drinker at home. At the office I do sometimes drink the coffee. Imagine this: I started a new job in 2014 and I started partaking of the coffee to help me stay productive. First day I'd have 1 cup in the morning. And then nurse tea the rest of the day. All thi...

Re: Where to move

I think the hardest thing will probably be making and seeing friends. However, we’ve been in Chicago 1 year now and still don’t have any local friends... outside of work and football. In my experience from moving to a new city for work and being all alone, my social life didn't really kick in until...

True. Just google searched after posting, highlights some obvious cons I hadn’t thought of: https://www.reddit.com/r/personalfinance/comments/3upd24/is_it_a_bad_idea_to_buy_a_house_a_small_town_when/ Many of these small towns though I couldn’t find rental listings on... Not at all.. Isn't it normal to ponder on big questions like this? 😁

Basically it's something I've been thinking about in the back of my head for the past year, just wanted to get more viewpoints and ideas.

Re: Policies to drive antifragility in the tech world?

We used to enforce antitrust laws in the tech space. There are a few politicians-- largely Warren/Sanders plus conservatives who dislike the liberalism of tech circles-- who want to bring antitrust enforcement back. If you want to see more segmentation and less monopolization, those folks need to h...

Re: Policies to drive antifragility in the tech world?

I'm fairly libertarian on this point. I don't think it is such a problematic situation, because there is an alternative to everything. And any abuse of Monopoly leads to people switching to ditto alternatives. All my friends migrated from Facebook and what's app to telegram recently, AMD is beating...

Policies to drive antifragility in the tech world?

Hi folks! I wanted to pick your brains about coming up with ways to improve antifragility in the tech world. From my perspective, there's a very unfortunate and strong "winner take all" or power law effect in the tech world that seems to result in fairly thin long tails. For example in the desktop w...
