Re: Should I sign a two year contract with my current employer?

Sounds weird to me. Too long term. It's not like it's a 600k a year deal. Say no thanks unless it's 110.

"Does Sydney man’s plan to retire at 35 make sense?"

Re: Travelhack-List

In this country if people talk of a holiday in Europe, they do not mean the south of Cork. There are many sites that connect wanderers with house (really pet) sitting opportunities. You build up a reputation over time and get better gigs the more attractive you are. We have enjoyed all of our experi...

Re: The meandering musings of Mister Freedom

My sister has "year of"'s. Year of this, year of that. This year it is 10000 km of adventure. Or something like that. She was meant to do a year of simplicity, but to be honest her idea of it is different to mine. (eg the bought her 7 year old kid an expensive fitbit - he ate it).

Re: Expensive dinners and drinks with friends

Sometimes you have to spend money to make money.

Also, during the accumulation phase, sometimes this involves a certain lifestyle, and indeed, this can be a perk. Dropping this side of things post R comes naturally.

Re: McMansion Hell

@Did - Damn. That certainly doesn't sound good for the faint-of-hearted! What do you love about it? Is it a cost-effective option for Irish housing? Also, are you having to renovate it totally for heating, electricity, etc? I am curious. That's a unique housing setup. Do not think I am some master ...

Re: McMansion Hell

I wouldn't recommend an old stone cottage. Well, we love it. But old stone things in a place like Ireland are prone to smelling like old stone things. Like a castle ruin. Damp and the like. And there is dust, and if you are unlucky, mold. I'm not sure where the dust comes from. The roof maybe. Perha...

Re: Thoughts about respectability

On signalling. I've been out of the corporate sector for over 4 years. I'm trying to dabble back for a little while, but people interviewing are confused and suspicious (even though I'm fudging the 4 years somewhat). I think they smell the freedom and disdain on me.

Re: McMansion Hell

We are still living in our small, 100 year old plus stone cottage in rural Ireland. Our bedroom is so narrow only one of us can shuffle down the side of our bed comfortably. But the strange thing is, when back in my parent's normal sort of suburban house in Australia earlier in the year, I got a bit...

Rags to riches to rags

"It is a safe bet there will never be another Nathan Tinkler. A former apprentice electrician, Tinkler went from living with his parents to becoming Australia’s youngest ever billionaire – and, last week, going bankrupt. His extraordinary rise and fall took just 12 years, and neatly sums up an unpre...

@jacob Off topic, but do consider having the pet sitter come to you, for free, if you want a holiday.

I’m 42 and I want to retire

IT MIGHT be financially impossible but I’m ready to retire. And so are all my friends. I’d be quite happy hanging around doing pottery.

Re: How much do you value location independence?

Yeah I have seen that. My new at home gig is probably looking to pay less than 1/10th of my income before quitting. Same guy but this is the best gig I can seem to get and it has taken years of looking. I'm not sure I can do it to be honest - be someone's bitch. Not sure if the ego can handle it. I...
