Re: Master's in Social Work?

My mother in law is still working at age 84 with a MSW. She was a director at county Mental Health District. She made decent money but probably not as much as you think. She retired many years ago but does her current gig for the 100 percent travel and to "give back". Her job is all paperwork. As a ...

Re: Computers of the future?

TBH it seems like a solution in search of a problem. I love the single board computers and have them all over the place. Generally run them headless and ssh into them. I am not sure how this computer represents an upgrade from whats out there. The Pi 3 is about as fast and has a robust community of ...

Re: Fox's Journey: Out of the Burrow

When I graduated long ago, I had a bachelors in psychology and businesss minor from a generic mid-west state college. My plan was to get a job in HR as an industrial psychologist. Like a lot of new grads, I thought good paying jobs would be plentiful. My first interview was with a lawn service outfi...

Re: I'm starting to hate my 9-5?

Ah, the double edged sword of discovering ERE when you are young. You have endless possibilities to achieve anything you desire but the knowledge you have tortures you when you are starting out with seemingly an endless cascade of days in front of you. I envy you and don’t envy you. I was in no way ...

Re: Social Security- not what you are thinking

@7W5 A couple of observations from an introvert (like Riggerjack): In the 4 years you have been here, I have seen this cycle play out a couple times. Highs and Lows. You are now at a low. In a month or two you will likely be back on the upswing - so hang tight. There is a fair amount of chaos in you...

Re: Pectus Excavatum

A lot of people think it is purely cosmetic and body image related - even those that are affected. That is not always the case. My son's doctor was able to sell the procedure to the insurance company as medically necessary on the grounds that his heart was lodged against his sternum during exercise....

Re: Pectus Excavatum

My son had this. He also ran track and had difficulty that I now am sure the condition hurt his performance. He had a hard time breaking three minutes for 800M (I was a sub 2 guy in HS). We tried to get him to do the surgery in HS and he predictably did not want to do it. During his freshman year in...

Re: Best adult push scooter?

I have the Xootr MG. My son may end up with it when he goes back to school. It is fun to screw around in the office. To me it is a toy, but it is very easy to go about a mile or so with it. I like the wider deck, but you are right - very low clearance. The kickped has wider tires at the expense of a...

Re: ICO Gold-rush -- Tokenize the world via Blockchain & Smart Contracts

Addendum: I am still puzzled by a few things. Namely: what can one actually use bitcoin for, aside speculation? From a rapid scan on the net, it seems like nobody is really accepting them as a form of payment. Sites like Expedia will let you pay, but they're not taking bitcoin, they're taking actua...

Re: Where are the failure-stories?

The typical definition of a success story here is a young intelligent person with a high income and no kids that is willing to maintain a college level bare bones budget and achieve FI in 10 years or less, which opens up freedom for whatever. However, this group is an outlier in a subset of outliers...

I bought some of this a few weeks back kind of as a lark. Bitcoins was 1500 and Eth was in the 70s. A fraction of a bitcoin and a little bit of eth. I was most interested in the eth because of the corporate interest. The run up is startling. I got one of those off-line wallets and selected as my logo...

Re: Telecommuting: why is not widespread?

My wife telecommutes part time. She was 100% telecommuting at home a few years ago and it drove her crazy. She goes in for the socialization primarily as her boss is back east and we are MT. To be honest she works much harder at home. In the past she had roles where people were calling her at 9-10 P...

I am still hanging tight. My loan profiles I seek are on the safe side and I still get defaults. I am primarily A/B and hi Cs and a few Ds. I filter very carefully. Very little else. Currently sitting at 5.6% on the IRA and 7.4% on the taxable. I would invest more in the IRA but the hoops I have to ...

Re: Would you give your kids money for college or life?

In response to saving-10-years last comment about the ERE talk, my kids both have gotten "the talk". You never know about how much is sinking in. My son in college is not very spendy compared to what I was like...Hopefully he was listening as I made lots of mistakes! Luckily we pulled out of it .

Re: Would you give your kids money for college or life?

For us, partial. We set aside money for both kids from birth through childhood. In addition, we fund or will fund them for 2 years and they can live at home rent free until they graduate college. Both kids also have a cell phone and my HS son costs me big additional money for his car insurance even ...

LC interest change

For those who invest in notes at LC, how do you think the new practice of charging accrued interest past the due date will play out. On the surface it is good news and fair, although the extra interest received may be minimal for the individual investor. I think some people are definitely abusing or...

Re: Tesla Cars

I guess Jacob can call me an eco-tech hippie LOL. I bought a used 2013 Leaf last November. Paid $12K and received a $3K CO credit. Used but never titled in CO. So for a net $9K I bought a car with 17K miles. The trim and amenities in this base model is basically what you would find in a $20-25K car ...
