Re: Local politicians run off Amazon - Economics

https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2019-02-15/amazon-plays-ultimatum-game-loses I found the city income tax an excellent point. It is nearly 4%. No matter how far out you live, NYC will still get its money. Working in Columbus, Ohio was my first experience with a city income tax. It was only one someth...

Re: new mating strategy gaming hypergamy

I haven't read this whole thread to date, but I thought this book might be relevant to what looks like a discussion about population in general. Note, I have not read it yet but am interested in doing so as soon as I can get my library to buy it. https://www.amazon.com/Empty-Planet-Global-Population...

CS, where is that stat from? One of the Pew surveys from 2018 pegged it at 40%.
https://www.cnbc.com/2018/03/23/more-wo ... -work.html

Also, if you look at the trend for the PEW study, 49% would be about spot on for 2019

Re: new mating strategy gaming hypergamy

Yeah, it's not a good strategy. Women really don't need men these days like they used to. Also, many women are forgoing kids - or if they do have them, going with a sperm bank so as to not be tied to who knows what. Psychologically, women tend much more to the fantasy of 'one true love'. The thought...

Keep the cabinet doors open around plumbing, especially for exterior kitchen walls. Learned that in Oregon, where the insulation levels are poor compared to the midwest.

Being too skinny is a health risk the older you get. Having 10 or 20 pounds you can lose due to illness, etc is a saver. I'm too lazy to dig up the tables, but those extra pounds (that range) add up to longevity over the skinny counterparts.

Re: Does one owe it to their parents to take care of them in old age?

I dunno. It could also be a function of neglect, or loss of close loved ones. My grandmother lived for ~40 years in a nursing home type facility. She died within months of her husband dying. The fact that Sclass was there for her, in so many ways, could have been the difference, not the setting.

Re: 164 Days Till FI!

Loneliness is a hard one to tackle. You are at an especially tough moment - most of your coworkers (when you aren't traveling) don't relate to where you are now in terms of life point of view - and you have little time to make new friends. At least that is what I found towards the end of working... ...

Re: The KonMari method

Also, donating the stuff is not entirely wasteful. It does generate jobs for people down the line. My post above was mostly about why to not spend too much time trying to sell unneeded things. But it can also work for why to not maintain extra stuff 'just in case'. It is a mental energy pit to care ...

Re: The KonMari method

@Jacob I think two other metrics would be better than dollars: time, and mental energy. For time - personally, I think 'if I died in two years (five years, whatever) is this how I want to have spent my life?' People die young. I'm at the age where people I went to grade school with are starting to d...

Re: More men than women interested in FIRE/ERE?

You are confusing two fundamentally different things - are women more interested in FIRE and why are women posting less. The misogyny present on this board sometimes is beyond appalling. It is not okay. As a woman, I'll participate sometimes, but as self-protection, I'm not going to spend too much t...

As a fan of South Korea cinema and TV (they have good storytellers in that country - a lot of constraints to bump up against). I've see enough of that culture to understand that prison. Not only do they work long hours, but they *have* to look good (so it's a whole additional job or two navigating s...

Public figures don't owe anyone anything. MMM is not an elected official (and even then). Saying he has to talk about something "or else" strikes me as a threat. :o (and yes, I edited this post to take out some in the judgment of it. Working on my reactionary nature. Sorry folks.) 'Alpha' is probabl...

Re: Are Tim Ferris, Tucker Max, Chris Gullibeau and other millionaire authors more discouraging than helpful?

@thf Stop finding reasons to be unhappy. For one thing, it is not going to help you with your other main complaint - finding a quality woman. There will always be someone richer, better looking, random x quality, more than you. Always. That cannot control your happiness if you want peace in your lif...

Don't know how much of an outliner this is but a friend's sister did actuarial and was able to get a cool job in London. Now back in the states I think she makes somewhere about half a million a year. I had no idea it was so lucrative. Or in such high demand.

Re: Will the cis-female bubble ever pop?

@seppia, totally agree, but then, why can't we Say that if women earn less, it's because they choose less lucrative carreers. Not true on choosing less lucrative careers as the reason why they earn less. The pay discrepancy is found in the same work fields and the same exact jobs. I believe people ...
