Re: How to retire when all of my friends live in cities

We're in the middle of this now. It impacts DW and I much differently. It will depend on how easy you make friends, how many of your type of people are around in each area, etc etc. Also, some people who grew up in a rural place, fairly or unfairly, associate a very deep rooted belief of a lack of o...

Re: How to retire when all of my friends live in cities

Ok, I gotta say this. WTF do you think we do in rural areas that is so different from cities? If you move to a new area, you make new friends. Sometimes old friends fade away with distance. Do you think your NYC friends will stick by you if you live in SF, but fade away if you move to West Virginia...

Re: The impossibility of growth

The most likely "solution" is horrible to contemplate, but will probably involve losing a large percentage of the earth's population in a couple generations of disease/war/starvation. The black plague wiped out 30-60% of the European population. It's quite possible the world population could be set...

Re: The cost-benefit of becoming a dentist/doctor

It depends heavily on what you consider the opportunity cost of going to med school.

On the doc side, as Chad alludes to, the system is pushing docs to increasingly specialize to catch up.

Re: Cookware Recommendations?

Don't use cast iron on a smoothtop electric range... it will scratch the glass. Yep. We have an enameled "bistro griddle" we use for this. We ended up with an All Clad copper core pan set bought with CC points a while back. They are pricey and you do pay for the name, but they met my demands of no ...

Re: Financial Secrets of the Amish

Small business and self-sufficiency titans... I do think ERE could learn from them. They're so good it's giving me a complex! If you can't beat 'em, join 'em! The Amish don't allow the net and such in their homes, but do use it competently to promote their businesses, which is interesting. I ...

Re: Towers Watson survey re: retirement plan satisfaction

I don't think many people who pine for the days of corporate sponsored defined benefits have taken the time to look in to how they've worked out. The job hopping modern workforce makes this very complicated. This is the union siren song though. A couple of years ago I saw a push for an IT union offe...

Re: The High Priest of Branding

@Felix- In one of my classes we had a personal networking project, part of the final deliverable was a reflection on the process. My comments were how I strongly disliked the concept and that it wasn't authentic to me. My professor's reply was that, "no entrepreneur has been successful without help...

Great, see I wish I'd known these are in there as a matter of course!

Mine actually has a no kidding cheat code, you have to press a combo of buttons at the right time to put the "computer" in to diagnostic mode where you get manual control of things, superpowers. :)

Re: Redefining ‘retirement’ as FI creates unnecessary confus

Hahaha, I love FUME! Renaissance FUME'ers of the world, unite! I don't hate my job or boss, but I still think FUME is one of life's most important attainments. I occasionally notice very different perspective from colleagues due to having many years worth of savings, and clean, simple finances...

http://blog.estately.com/2014/04/the-nerdiest-states-in-america/ Caveat: These might be least nerdiest states since the survey measured facebook interests which might reflect that people in these states have to resort to fb instead of irl. These are cheap nerd fun appealing to a certain demographic...

Re: Bye Bye Middle Class

Surprising the NYT got it right- the US middle class has allowed it's technical prowess to decline on a relative scale at about the worst time they could've, just as manual labor was becoming exponentially less valuable.

Most of the other stuff written about this topic is noise.

Dude, you do not have a personal finance problem right now, other than maybe a gambling addiction. Quit that crap.

You are broke but have the internet. It is time to HUSTLE. Go to craigslist and start looking at labor gigs. Start making phone calls and emails. Right now!!!!!

Dragline hinted at it so I figure I'll drop a link as Montaigne's discussion of self consistency was one of my favorites.

Great posts guys. I have been with the same company a long time. The only reason I have is every time I've been ready to quit, I've decided I'd better look hard in the mirror. Never have I liked what I saw. I've been through it a few times and it is usually is followed by almost manic bursts of grea...

Re: How popular could extreme FIRE become?

@Seneca - Have you noticed that MMM and ERE are both written by immigrants? 8-) We might look crazy in the US but where we grew up we're not that strange. MMM is basically "first world ex US"-lifestyle with a high income in the US. ERE is basically "second world"-lifestyle with an average income in...

Re: How popular could extreme FIRE become?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diffusion_of_innovations Personally I don't think ERE will ever be voluntarily practiced in the mainstream by enough to get to the tipping point. (I use dieting megafads with weight megatrends as exhibit A) I do think a hybrid basic frugality and MMM sort of thing could ...

~50/50 within investments, all low cost index. A bit better if you include matching.

I am glad you asked the question, I hadn't actually checked mine. Very unsatisfied with this.

Re: Bundy Ranch Standoff

There is no reason the Dry Creek project cannot choose another area for off site remediation, the government formally identified and studied other areas. Bundy's area is simply the easiest and cheapest, if only that pesky Bundy wasn't there. Don't you think there will be a user of the land elsewher...
