Re: Rube's journal

Serendipity and dumb luck have conspired to make us "too comfortable" again, so this is a recurring problem. In the past, our autophagic sabbaticals have allowed us to clean out the clutter, remove the dysfunctional bits, and reinvigorate the parts responsible for MacGyvering. I know we w...

Re: Rube's journal

Wow, lot of replies. Thank you all. Some reflections, thoughts: It might help to ask ‘what kinds of discomfort can I welcome/design that will induce me to move/act in the ways I most want to?’ That's a very good question, but less easy to answer. During writing of the post one major thing I can thin...

Re: Rube's journal

Alright, I will continue to post once in a while. In this case a lot of random thoughts.... I do not follow the forum so in depth anymore, which is actually a shame as I waste too much time on other useless things and there is still so much to learn. This morning I read this post from Jacob in the j...

Re: Notebook of comandante

Just a quick.note to say: good luck, whatever you'll do. Hopefully you'll keep us updated. If you don't go back immediately to your HC, maybe we can still see you at a meetup?
Again, good luck with the next chapter(s) of life.

Re: Portable washing machine experiment

We just wrenched out as much water as possible by squeezing and twisting the clothes before line drying, we didn't had any other options. If you don't do this, it indeed takes way ,way longer to line dry. We had times when it was raining and very humid outside and inside and it took days to dry. But...

Re: Portable washing machine experiment

+1 what DutchGirl says. I once lived 6 months in a region where washing machines were not available to us and not to 98% of the local population. We just copied the local customs. That is, hand washing in a large bucket and line drying. We also have frequently did hand washing while traveling. This ...

Re: ERE Travel Thread

@sodatrain @basuragomi and @frita thanks for the tips and generous offer to lend tent/hammock. I looked into all the options and found a few good options, one of the best options was (indeed) a private room in a studenthostel that turns into touristho(s)tel during the summer. But the better choice (...

Re: ERE Travel Thread

I'm planning to visit Toronto for about a week in the second half of June. Previously my visits to Toronto were work related, now it's purely pleasure with visiting some friends and enjoying the city and perhaps a little outside Toronto I would love to meet forummites for a chat and drink, a hike or...

Of course! Feel free to reach out. There are a bunch of others from NL - around Amsterdam who might be able to help out as well.

Re: Rube's journal

I'm still alive. Just living my life, doing things and doing nothing. Ups and downs. Most or all of the regular stuff people do except going to work and getting a paycheck. I solved the issue how to account for our solar panels income versus payment for energy usage. Solution: we bought an electric ...

Re: 2024 market predictions

The point is if governments should be allowed to ban products that have been in the market for a century. These products (cars) won't be banned? They just change requirements to cars from time to time. Similar to when seatbelts became a requirement and when asbestos was no longer allowed in breakin...

Haha, he did say that, though if you look a few minutes later he's just stuffing everything into that backpack. Didn't look like high level Tetris at all. Based on my experencie from backpacking, after a few times packaging and unpacking you create a habit and know exactly how and where you pack the...

Re: How's that working out for you?

This thread is pretty theoretical  Like others said above, it's all about balance. Sometimes you need more theory, sometimes you need more practice. I like the quote Jacob wrote "Never spend 30 days in the lab when you could have spent 1 hour in the library." as it makes perfect sense...
