Re: The 9.9 Percent Is the New American Aristocracy

@7

I once used the word "mortified" in a conversation and a dude got mad at me for being uppity. It's not your fault other people are stupid.

Re: Woodworking: Drilling holes in cylinders

1. Do you have a drill press and how long of a cylinder is it? Stay away from an auger or spade bit for that application. A brad point or a forstner bit would work well assuming it's jigged up well. 2. That one is easy if you have a table saw to make a jig. Tilt your blade to 45 degrees and rip a V ...

Re: Selling stuff?

I just sold a car yesterday on Craigslist. Most people on there are normal folks who just want to sell something. And I'm really glad all of that sex and prostitution is now off of the site which was really seedy in my opinion. I don't ever have someone come to my house and I really don't like going...

Re: The 9.9 Percent Is the New American Aristocracy

@7 I wouldn't read too much into it. I too flitter between the blue collar and professional class and depending on what the group thinks you are they will make their remarks accordingly. For what it's worth, I've noticed a lot more negative comments directed at the working class from people who get ...

Re: The Rise of Bullshit Jobs

It seems like this occurs more often in white collar work. Unless a union is involved, blue-collar work involves working for the time paid.

Re: Join the Family Business or strike out on my own?

So your parents have no savings and large debts, are older, 60's and 70's, and run a small business that keeps them afloat, barely. Walk away. Unless you want your labor and investments to be their retirement fund. And you may, but from a financial standpoint there are many red flags here. You will ...

@Gilberto

I told her so beforehand. Unfortunately I have a lot of experience trying to kill that shit. The problem is that the birds keep spreading the seeds and that stuff will root anywhere.

@jp

Interesting but what about all of those air-gaps and they never once focused on the seams where the two shells meet. I guarantee you wind driven rain gets in but if you use as an outdoor space it would be nice. And don't forget to close it up when it rains... :D

Re: Beliefs, Preferences and Delusions

@rigger Many years ago after I got through my own disillusionment phase, I realized several things: People are motivated by self-interest, no matter how altruistic they seem The self-interest is manifested by different internal factors unique to that person, with personality and environment both pla...

The herb garden is coming along: https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1809/41191806340_49208d9585_z.jpg I've had great success with the lemon balm, cilantro, tarragon, oregano, peppermint, basil, and dill. Unfortunately, the cress, cumin, marjoram, and parsley haven't done so well. I'm also growing strawb...

Re: Tiny home festival!

I think it's a fad on the downhill side personally. Too many builders and not enough customers. Location matters. Here in Ky you can purchase a real home with land for the same price they are asking. I do love seeing how creative people get solving issues with the small space. Some of it is really c...

Re: Beliefs, Preferences and Delusions

@rigger Haha, not porn although I'm sure there is porn out there that involves truckers. As part of the class they gave us a homemade anarchist's book the protesters made so we would kinda know what to expect if protesters showed up. They didn't, which was almost disappointing as I wanted to destroy...

@Brute Here's a recent example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P1FWLmoNTn0 Sometimes they use barrels filled with concrete too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GManC_QJCh0 The class was pretty fun actually destroying all of these devices. The caveat was that you couldn't hurt anyone in the process ...

Welcome back! We've missed you. Great pictures as always; I've always liked your staging and simplicity. Re: The 9.9 Percent Is the New American Aristocracy

@7, Jacob I understand how people work. It doesn't mean I have to have sympathy for them or validate their poor decision-making. Regarding the proper use of your time or the proper allocation of your paycheck, yes, there are many inefficiencies regarding work, pay, and results. I'm sure your paychec...

Re: Beliefs, Preferences and Delusions

Just a corollary, but I once took a class in protester counter-measures. Specifically, defeating the various devices protesters use to shut down various operations and cause a scene to highlight their causes. A lot of them seem to like to handcuff themselves to machinery or themselves with devices t...

Are the light fixtures going to be installed before you move in? All of those hanging wires are bothering me. Haha

What about kitchen cabinets? Sink?

The loft is nice. You can lay in bed and stargaze.

Re: The 9.9 Percent Is the New American Aristocracy

@7 Are there enough resources for all Americans to lead comfortable lives? Yes and then some. Why the constant score-keeping over who has what and how much? Or little? The reason your fourth graders can't read is because they don't want to learn how. It's really that simple. That they have the luxur...

Re: The 9.9 Percent Is the New American Aristocracy

Regarding Richard Reeves, it all comes down to whether one believes the stratification is a zero-sum game, as he clearly does. I don't care about the 1% or the 20% as long as the rest of the population has the means and opportunity for a comfortable life. I think the vast majority does in fact have ...
