Re: Insulin Resistance
I have had very good experience with the Gundry Diet helping with my pre-diabetic symptoms. According to Dr. Steven Gundry lectins are a problem for many many people and a cause of many of the common diseases we have around us. Lectins are found in the most common sources of carbs in our diet which ...

Re: What constitutes a buy nothing year?
“Who is going to wash all of the disgusting snot rags produced by a herd of 5 year olds if Kleenex is not provided?” I am not supposing this to be an effective approach for 5 year olds -- my personal wisdom regarding that species of human being rather thin. BUT in my reading of old books -- this pa...

Re: Dedicated Etiquette Thread
The advice to watch what other people are doing and catch their tone and follow it (which I take as very good advice), I nevertheless find myself at a loss when I go to think about how to actually do that. I wonder if I have some really bad attitudes in my head about 'fitting in' -- maybe that is my...

Personally, I think I need to start at chapter 35, "The Kindergarden of Etiquette".

Re: Can modern world even function when most people are only out there for themselves?
I hear the despair in your question and recognize it for how I sometimes feel when I watch too much news. All of our culture, but especially the news focuses on what is wrong with the world. In the face of all that I crave the sense that hope still exists somewhere in this world. After much trial an...

Re: How to read the news
... maybe the focus should be on getting better news. Finding better news is really challenging. At the moment my main strategy is to find somewhere to scan headlines and then (if I am interested in knowing more) looking up the matter on Wikipedia. On major news stories some of the best coverage is...

Re: Let's talk about how to avoid darknetting ERE
This is a stray thought that I haven't processed fully, but it seems to me that what was lost in closing down the Politics section was the casual conversations that that allowed, and what many of us are needing or wanting is remedial level course work on the models which are so frequently bandied ab...

One classic way to use nearly any meat/fish, vegetables, grains/starch/beans is soup/stew. It does take a bit of patience, but it is simple to do and works well if you make a lot and eat it for several days.
When I was a grad student, I did this on the weekends and only needed to reheat it later.

Re: Deliberate movement design by failure modes
In some failure modes someone would not move up a level at all. They would be coming in with too few resources to grok much and for them it would be a matter of perhaps gleaning a few ideas which change how they live at their old level. Or someone can grok almost all of the ideas except the ones whi...

Re: Better sheets?
I don't know anything about getting better sheets, but I do know an oldtimey alternative to fitted sheets: hospital corners. With hospital corners you can get any flat sheet to stay on any shape of bed. Okay obviously the sheet has to be bigger than the bed size -- but the point is that it no longer...

I know one way of avoiding smartphones. Unfortunately, I expect that it is not generally reproducable. It is to be a wife and let your husband take care of those nasty phone needing things.
He likes phones better anyway and is the one who cares about event tickets.
I hate phones

My small recommendation for trying to tell other people some strange and out there idea one has in one's mind is not to start from what you want to tell them, but to start from what they already understand. Communication requires a shared frame of reference and if I can map my mental image onto stuf...
