Re: New technology - that could solve our energy problem?!

It is the standard operating system of those who are in support of the system to make any plan they do not support look stupid by framing it in as silly a way as possible. Congratulations you have succeeded at exactly that!     Sure, Earthships are a cool concept. But consi...

Re: The five stage model of adult learning

Perhaps, I am fortunate to always have some hang up that makes me fail at the early stages. In the process of finding a way around my hang up I am forced to grapple with what is really trying to happen here and how to make a plan work in a non-ideal situation -- one not accounted for with most initi...

Re: Life without a washing machine...

i wash all wools in a wash bag. wool naturally repels stains and odors so it doesn't even require mega agitation, it simply needs the right chemical bath (light detergent + acidulation). wool also requires much less frequent washing. eg i make cotton armpits reek in a day, but merino armpits endure...

Re: Life without a washing machine...

I am not ready to live without a washing machine just yet, but I have recently begun to hand wash some of my clothes on a limited basis. I learned my technique from a couple of youtube videos. In the first video the women had brought the laundry to a stream. When there they soaped up the clothing an...

@ertyu though if someone knows of a particular reason why I shouldn't wash my teeth with bar soap pls share  I would wonder what nasty stuff had been slipped into the soap. Does your soap have a "this is poison do not eat" kind of warning on it? I have been dialing back on my use of a...

Re: Digital Minimalism?

@Green Pimble News exposure is highly correlated with feeling depressed. Therefore it can be good for one's mental health to limit one's exposure. (There is a cost of missing something important, but the really important things usually are hard to miss even if you aren't paying attention.) It can al...

Re: New technology - that could solve our energy problem?!

It would be a lot simpler just to replace our energy guzzling homes with Earthships -- a technology that is already fully in existence. Earthships take care of climate control by being in thermal contact with the Earth which is always at around 60 - 70 degrees F. Remove just the energy we use to kee...

Re: Dealing with anger in the face of everyday evil

In the process of trying to build our Earthship we had a real education on just how difficult it is to change the way things work in this society. In the aftermath of that I can no longer believe in the notion that the problem is technological. Lots of good technological ideas already exist out ther...

Re: Myakka's Journal

That Earthship is all but completed now and looks like it will be sold. (The dream of living there has vanished for both of us.) I keep voting for extra money to go towards paying off the line of credit still outstanding from the effort to get it closer to being completed. We will be carrying no deb...

Re: ERE Audiobook

This would be a great option for me because while I read very well information just seems to stick in my brain sooo much better when I hear it. I am looking at the bookfunnel site and it talks about listening to the book on a phone, but all I have is this PC here. If I buy the audio version of the b...

Re: Maintaining happiness/contentedness despite adversity

To echo and enlarge (a bit) on what the_platypus has said, after many years of inner torment, I have found the keys to inner peace to be: 1) not to judge other people harshly. That is particularly tough to do with some politicians, but it is an improvement to choose to feel sad for them and to remin...

Re: Pseudoanonymity and/or exiting cyberspace

So many different ideas on how to protect oneself on the internet, but I don't see how an individual is to really know either what the dangers really are or what strategies effectively reduce the dangers -- other than a partial exiting of cyberspace. The dangers I am most sure about are the addictiv...

Re: Trump News Network: Implications for the Individual

-From an investor and systems perspective, how does one ensure that they are anti-fragile in light of such trends? Again I hope we can keep this discussion civil and thoughtful. The best way I have found to build resiliency into my life is to change the manner in which I consume information. After ...

Re: Trump News Network: Implications for the Individual

- Trump will launch the Trump News Network as soon as he leaves office, and it will yield more influence than any other news platform and give him more influence than he had in the Oval Office because it will allow him to completely control the narrative -Trump's platform will likely exist entirely...

I have not read this book but years ago I read another sort of on this same theme : The Spirit of Regeneration: Andean Culture Confronting Western Notions of Development, Palgrave 1998 by Frédérique Apffel-Marglin. The articles in the book (except for the introduction) are written by the Andean peas...

Re: ?s about the Veggie Oil Diesel Conversion Thing

My husband and I did this for a while maybe 10 years ago. Based on that experience what I would add to your list of objections is the routine handling of hazardous chemicals, and the ongoing maintenance of your equipment. We gave it up because it was like my husband having a second job. (Much of the...

Re: A Conservative Policy Solution to Slow Down Climate Change?

I agree with 7Wannabee the detective is a criminal. The real problem is that there is no consideration for the welfare of the planet in the system. It doesn't make anyone money to care about. It doesn't increase the power of the eilte. I see no signs that Biden's team is different about this than Tr...

One of my prefered time wasting habits is to play around in the freebie art program that comes standard on the PCs I've seen. Mostly I make crap but occasionally I make something I really like and that becomes my wallpaper until I get tired of it. Another thing I do with my wallpaper is put somethin...

Re: Is humanity worth saving?

A key problem with aliens swooping in and re-making the Earth in a sustainable fashion is whichever new Earth the few who are currently intent upon hoarding all of the resources to themselves so as to impoverish (nearly) everyone else, would tend to replicate today's disaster someday. My impression ...
