The practicalities of dealing with supply issues

With a record number of container ships sitting off the coast and our inability to offload them fast enough Christmas happens to be coming in a few months to add seasonal demand. People are flush with cash from stimulus checks and if they haven't spent them yet some will decide that Christmas is a g...

Re: Spiraling out of Control

Genetic testing shows the modern human version of the Foxp2 gene (a gene theorized to be involved in language development) to have become widespread around 150,000 years ago. Since language and magical thinking are both forms of abstraction maybe they showed up around the same time. Plus going from ...

Re: Emergence of the Literature of Climate Change

Those who were children in the 90s might remember Captain Planet taking pollution back down to zero on the TV. I doubt it's a great setting for fiction though. A big part of the fun in fiction is imagining yourself the hero. The thing is ordinary people aren't the hero with climate change. Quite the...

Re: Church Bulletin Weekly Laudato Si Action Items Ideas?

I almost got kicked out of the group at the first meeting because I pushed back on someone who was proposing that the parish put a glass recycling bin in the parking lot because it's gotten so difficult lately to recycle glass. :? Maybe you should hold off on mentioning that one then. edit: Maybe a...

Fix something you would ordinarily throw out.

Find something in your trash you can repurpose.

Find a local food grower to buy from (instead of getting things that are shipped halfway around the world).

Plant an edible plant

Re: Mental HIIT

A few thoughts: It is quite possible some here are already "overexercising". Keeping mentally active staves off dementia. People have been trying to increase IQ through mental exercise for years. People get better at the tasks they practice, but when they test using a different method it i...

Re: COVID model - Bio stats observations and questions

After 4.5 billion doses I suspect we would have a good idea by now. We have great data on the short term effects, but you shouldn't just think that observing tons of short term data equals observing over the long term. Some things take time to play out. You could observe chimps for a month after ma...

Alternatively you could start a business, trade stocks, write a novel, learn a language, take a class, or any one of a dozen of productive things.

Re: COVID model - Bio stats observations and questions

So how would you know what the best vaccine is? We don't know what the long term side effects are with any of them, because they haven't existed long enough. One might increase your chances of a horrible condition 5 years from now and we won't know (covid itself could have long term effects we don't...

I somewhat understand this but may need more concrete examples.
Yes to examples, but be aware of selection bias. No one tells the tale of those who gave up and achieved the expected results of zero benefit.

Re: Ultimate Stoic Frugality Challenge

I'm neither a stoic nor a doctor, but I'd go carnivore for a month and see if that helped. Despite the vegan claim that meat rots in the colon the truth is that the majority of meat is absorbed before it reaches the colon. So you could give the colon a break. Plus many people with autoimmune disorde...

Re: What kinds of systems are we?

;) Isn't it a little hard to operate without both? I've seen people who stubbornly refused to adjust to feedback from both other people and their environment. It doesn't end well. You can go postmodernist and say there are a near-infinite number of beliefs you can have about any topic. Sure, but the...

Re: How should I invest excess cash money without having to pay tax on it?

Don't worry about raising your tax bracket. It doesn't work the way some people presuppose. The first you make 10k is taxed at 10%. The your income from 10k to 40k is taxed at 12%. From 40 to 85 it's 22% and so on. Increasing the bracket doesn't make you keep less on what you already made. You could...

Re: Strategic fat accumulation

IMO the problems likely only start at very extremely low levels, and pretty much no-one is getting that low except for some extreme cases, so it is not worth worrying about. In retrospect I should have used a stronger word than abnormal. I was just mentioning niche uses because I really don't see a...

Re: Strategic fat accumulation

I guess if you had a reason to get to abnormally low body fat you would want to plan to raise it again. Too low of fat messes with your hormones. Men get low testosterone and women lose their periods. So maybe performers such as actors or dancers?

Re: Strategic fat accumulation

Well, bodybuilders cycle from bulking phases to cutting phases. Although the point isn't to put on fat the net effect of getting bigger is you put on fat. These people know this and plan to get bigger and take the fat off. Intentionally putting on fat just seems risky to me though, because once you ...

Re: Remote Work - life implications

They can't always see the work you put in only the results which is fine if your productivity is easily measurable and the quality of the work isn't particularly subjective, but that isn't always the case. It's also hard to see what your coworkers are doing. So it's hard to copy good ideas or know h...

Maybe start a YouTube channel or 2. You have to get a certain amount of subscribers to monetize ads, but you can have an Amazon store linked in the description, sell teespring merch, and have a patrion right away. There might be some room in the movie critic niche as there really only seems to be a ...
