Re: Fox's Journey: And Onto the Sunlight!

RE the Corps of Engineers, almost all of the jobs, including GIS and actual engineering jobs, are done by civilians, not the Army officers. You just apply through USAJOBS.gov.

Re: Will Gas Stations Exist In 15 Years?

IIRC, the issue with the brakes was that if you don't use them, they have to be serviced because they rust up/seize up. I'll try to find the article again.

Re: Will Gas Stations Exist In 15 Years?

I’m also not sure that maintenance costs will be less for an electric car. We know that the batteries are expensive and need to be replaced every few years. We also know that the electric vehicles so far are much harder or impossible for an individual to DIY repair due to proprietary systems that a...

Re: How much house is "enough"?

my take is kitchens are workshop/lab space. . . one can have a great functional easy to clean kitchen if you model somewhat after a restaurant--steel counters, open steel shelves (even on wheels), etc. chromed wire shelves hide nothing and wipe easy. these you can get inexpensive and new at home de...

Like Seppia, I've never understood that argument either. Just because you own stock in a UK corporation that generates revenue in foreign countries, you wouldn't have stock in foreign corporations.

Yet another interviewer fails to follow up on the "I can also kill you with a fucking sword" prompt.

Sigh.

It was fun to watch, that is for sure. On Wallstreetbets some said they have until 6pm to cover their shorts. It's not over yet I guess. Don't options expire on the third Friday of the month? This is the fifth Friday of January, so I figured either the contracts had expired already, or else the sho...

I'd imagine working in a non-busy library would afford you plenty of opportunities to read.

Re: Electric Vehicles

Those Aptera vehicles remind me of the Elio Motors "cars" that advertised really high MPG. They got around the safety features that hinder higher MPG (or better battery performance in EVs) because they're technically motorcycles for regulation purposes. According to their FAQs, Aptera is u...

I love these recs so so much, thank you. You could probably ride your bike to Belle Isle, it's only 11 miles. I'm guessing you already know about it, but it has a cool aquarium, museum, & conservatory, beaches, races, playgrounds, etc. You could stop by Sister Pie to fuel up for the ride back t...

Re: Best cookies

Do you have cookies regularly, or have you been without for a while? I think any cookie would be good if you've been keto for a while or something. I find that after a while not drinking I'll hear something like, "You know, Miller Lite really is full of flavor!" and realize they are coming...

Re: In Praise of Doing Nothing

I saw a video about dopamine detoxing a while ago, very interesting stuff. I've done it a few times since then and I think it really works as a way to re-baseline yourself. I'm sure the ancients would approve. It reminded me of what the guy who wrote The Hungry Brain said about what people used to e...

If the only draw of moving is to buy a (still expensive) house with a mortgage, I think I'd pass. Do you know people in that area? Or is there something cool nearby?

Re: Best way to care for leather shoes and boots?

I have a pair of leather Sperry boat shoes that are 12 years old that I wear quite a bit. I rub them down with mink oil a few times a year and they haven't fallen apart yet. With dress shoes/boots I just used polish and I still have some pretty old ones that are in excellent condition.

That does indeed sound cool. I thought rehabbing a house was like "Practical Man Skills University" except you stand to get paid to learn them. And at a much more leisurely (well.. personalized) pace than if you were employed as a carpenter, plumber, painter, landscaper, or electrician. He...

The C4 crops idea is one of the coolest things I've heard about in the past couple years. It was such a trip hearing that this amazing process, photosynthesis, actually kind of sucks.
