Re: Income sources other than ‘normal jobs’
This is kinda skirting the line between 'a job' and 'other than normal jobs' but you can work in Antarctica during the summer season with room and board included. PAE has the contract, and they hire all kinds of jobs and trades: electrician, carpenter, vehicle mechanics & drivers, aircraft loade...

It makes perfect sense now. I like the minimalist setup; add in a weight tree to keep everything tidy (OCD lyfe) & protect your walls and you're complete. Stay swole bro.

Sure, I'll give you all the infos. The weight lifting equipment is all from Rogue -- https://www.roguefitness.com/ -- which fits my generic long term buying strategy of paying a little extra for quality, but not trying to get 100% top of the line either. I got the SML-1, ohio power bar, mil spec bu...

So you bought your gym setup from a retailer? Can you tell me more about what you did there? I like the idea of doing the recumbent bike while on the computer, I've been looking for one (that looks stable and not cheap) on craigslist for a while with no luck. I remember a guy doing very low intensit...

Re: How would you design your house?
The utility I'm most concerned about is electricity. The only major concern is the freezer during the summer. As I've mentioned elsewhere it's off from early October-late April. It's a newer unit so the efficiency is about as high as you can get but nonetheless it would still be my greatest draw of...

Re: PSA: USA Seasonal Job Opportunity 2020
Which positions make the most money? It depends what they're short on in your area. In general, though, field & office supervisors and recruiting assistants make the most. Enumerators and clerks the least. You just fill out the online application and it puts in in a general pool along with ever...

Re: How would you design your house?
For a 2 acre place in Alaska, here are some thoughts: I would rather have a small, single story or 1.5 story house. I've read a couple books with designs, both by Rowan (Compact Cabins and Compact Houses) that had various layouts. I would look at something with a loft, like you said, or a more conve...

I threw my hat in as well, also for the supervisory position. I'm not sure about the door to door but based off some of their questions it almost seems like they put you near where you live. If that's the case, it could be a decent way to get to know your neighbors and the local area a bit better. ...

Forget Utah. Too many mormons and unlike other religious chicks, mormon chicks are...not the chicks you're looking for. Or maybe the non-mormon m/f ratio is good? His point, in the podcast at least, was that Utah Mormons have a skewed sex ratio which leads to female Mormons doing their best to be a...

jacob, Genghis Khan and Christopher Columbus took a shit ton of carbon out of the atmosphere with war and pestilence.
jenny, no need to worry about me, I'm very happy; I was critiquing the guy in the video.

He didn't actually say how to enjoy the downslope. He spent the entire lecture describing why we should give up hope ( here ). Why would one give up and live a subsistence farmer-lifestyle now, when one could enjoy the fruits of the fossil fuel economy as long as it's possible. Especially since &quo...

Re: White Belt's Military Journey to FI
I recently discovered ADOS (Active Duty for Operational Support). Basically this allows me to pick up short term contracts in the reserves/Guard anywhere from a few weeks up to an entire year. This is exactly the kind of flexibility I’m looking for in semi-retirement. I can choose the location and ...

AoM had an interesting podcast with Jon Birger, author of Date-onomics, about the effects of skewed sex ratios. He said a lot of good things about Utah.

I'm not fully on board with the idea that it is entirely due to the fact that something is wrong with me since half of that time I lived in an area that had a population of 8 women, with the next town over 200 miles away. I think you understand the primary issue. George Clooney couldn't pull chicks...

Re: Are humans evolving faster or slower?
Came across this recently. Until the last ten years it was widely believed that cultural evolution had taken over from genetic evolution in our species. When farming replaced hunting and gathering, something fundamentally changed in the relationship between us and our surroundings. We no longer had ...

Re: Biased news
The circus is the thing you give people to entertain them and distract them from what's going on in politics. Maybe the word you're looking for is demagoguery*. Circus was meant to distract people, demagoguery is meant to rile them up.

Yeah, and the cynical side of me thinks of all the bed bugs you can get for free..... Seriously, for $1200 a month, I’d hope there’s some serious cleaning happening, but something tells me there’s not. Bed bugs are a HUGE problem in hostels, and I can’t think it would be significantly different in ...

Re: Range by David Epstein
Epstein was criticized for including too much research and factual information in The Sports Gene. I don't agree with the criticism but others thought the book was a bit dry and burdensome. I'm guessing that's why Epstein tried to make this book more readable. He comes from the sports writing world...
