Re: What doesn't kill you might make you dumber?

From what you wrote elsewhere, they also look down on you. Perhaps it's a matter of different value systems - you value what you have and don't value what they have, and vice versa? Maybe everyone's just happy where they are? They are happy till they meet me and try to compete which is what we were...

Re: What doesn't kill you might make you dumber?

Traditional individual intelligence testing loads pretty heavily on processing speed- This is a great point. Reminds me of my family. They’re super student high IQ overachiever types. But like most valedictorians they turned out to be duds in the long game. Fifty years later looking at the long gam...

Re: What doesn't kill you might make you dumber?

The brain is plastic. I watched my father, grandfather and uncle recover from strokes and creuzfeldt-Jakob disease. In each case they all had severe damage to their brains and they managed to get back skills like reading, talking and walking. It took a year but they were very persistent about exerci...

Re: Fixit Log

I was inspired by your post so I googled and saw how basic and easy the fix could be. I looked for the temperature sensor to see it it was touching the inside of the oven walls. I expected it to be protruding into the oven cavity. Thanks for!! Ok, looks like these machines are pretty simple...

Re: Fixit Log

Yeah. It’s totally cool to ask for help here. Tell us a bit about the oven. Model and make. What is it doing? Sometimes you can do a search on your model and make online and it may have a common flaw that is easy to fix. Generally speaking when I debug some device I like to know how it works. Then I...

Re: Make Stuff Log

Thanks for the tip. I selected and scanned only what I cared to save. I scanned about 1000 images. It actually went pretty fast. Pop the slide in and hit the shutter button. Pop it out and toss it in the trash. The slide scanner was extremely effective and efficient. The iPhone made it very convenie...

Re: Make Stuff Log

35mm slide scanner I am going through my dad’s things and realized I should digitize some of his many 35mm slides. What to do with a dead persons photos? Good question. It’s like I’m throwing away a life but I don’t know half of the people in these old photos. Anyhow I decided to digitize them in ca...

Re: Something From Nothing Log

Wandered out of my favorite taco stand yesterday and I found this vape pen in the lot. It was pretty beat up. Disposable non refillable type. I picked it up and took it home. Ripped it apart for the treasure it has inside. A rechargeable Lithium ion cell and a USB charging port. I can use this to ma...

Re: Fixit Log

That’s an interesting idea. I save the old spring steel strips out of windshield wiper refills. In the past I’ve used this stuff to torch weld steel. I almost grabbed some for this project but I backed off and used the ER70 instead. I was worried it would be too brittle. The blade is looking pretty ...

IOW, one hardcore problem with "buying care" is that the most caring humans generally can't be bought.
Indeed.

Re: ERE or Semi-ERE past Age 65

Money certainly makes some aspects of the end game easier. Having watched both of my parents die with more money than they could spend my conclusion is dying still sucks but in different ways. Both parents died with more money than they could use. And it took management to use the money as well. Mon...

@dranudin thanks for the tip. I think I’ll just leave it alone and sharpen it when it needs it.

Re: Fixit Log

Fixed my Corona tree pruner. I was sick of using this pruner with a broken blade. About 5mm was broken off the tip of the black section. My choices were to buy another blade, buy another pruner or try to repair or grind off the ragged tip of the cutter. Apparently somebody cut a branch and likely ja...

Re: Skill-based vs network-based work sourcing

Yeah do both. Survival requires a mix. I like to break down my modern reality by looking back at feudal and primitive society. You need all types to get by. Tech has made it a lot easier to get by with less social grease. Things my dad used social connections for I simply use some app or sw that I b...

Re: Nausea from Virtual Reality

Dunno I don’t fly.

Those sound like wimpy motors. The ones on the rides in theme parks like Harry Potter at Universal Studios really toss you around. They really cannot maintain reasonable acceleration for long.

Re: Fixit Log

Nice save. Perfect dodge of the appliance salesman or repairman. So I can see that module has its power terminals burned up. It would be interesting to see the insides of the gray box. Crack it open and post a shot of the top and bottom of the board if you have time. Then we can see what melted on t...

Re: Nausea from Virtual Reality

Likely so. For me it’s the mismatch between what I see in the visor vs. what is physically happening to my body. The worst is in the driving sim where I slam the brakes and the VR image of the view from my windshield pitches downward yet my head stays perfectly stationary. Instant nausea. I do this ...

Re: Make Your Own (Wobble Disk) Coffee Roaster

That came out nice. I use a popcorn popper and it is a lot of smoke and I risk burnt fingers. It was so much hassle I gave up and went back to roasted beans in a bag. Great machine. It looks like the form factor can evolve now that you have the proof of concept going. I bet you can shrink it to half...

Re: Make your own clock in home machine shop

So I received my watch timing machine from Aliexpress. It works very well on watches which is what the software was designed for. Not sure how it will work on DIY clocks. The free open source SW has some autodetect frequency feature which may not work on low frequency clock movements. Haven't played...

Re: Fixit Log

I recently went to Advance Auto for new windshield wipers and the tech told me for an extra $3 I could buy the warranty. :D sounds like something to put in an automatic reminder on a smartphone - repeat event indefinitely. I looked at the harbor freight compression tool. That one is good for single...
