Re: Fixit Log

GdP, forgive me but I have come to despise the precautionary principle. As a society we would be well served if we applied the precautionary principle to the precautionary principle itself. @GDP is just trying to keep me alive. Personally I’ve gotten pretty far by refusing to take precautionary adv...

Re: Fixit Log

I don’t quite get it. I had a length of safety line I was following along my roof. The problem was if I just clipped to it with a carbiner, if I slipped, I’d fall quite a way down the roof to where the end of the line was anchored. The carbiner will just slip down the rope like a zip line till I cra...

Re: Fixit Log

Attached tiles to my roof. Not my images but 80s tract homes all look like this in socal. The missing tiles were at the outer edge of the apex about 25’ up. They went crazy back then for vaulted ceilings. 80s middle class chic. Hard to heat. Hard to change recessed lighting. Super hard to climb up a...

@Scott I didn’t take it that way.

I may be mistaken over the text communication but maybe this is stirring a change in you.

Cleaned dryer vent

Hey I just cleaned my dryer vent. My wife told me our dryer was broken and would shut down before drying the clothing and flashed a clogged vent code. I went outside and sure enough I saw part of a bird’s nest in the vent opening. If I don’t keep the little gravity operated door perfectly clean it j...

Re: Stop 401k to pay off mortgage?

My initial response to "middle class investments designed to help retirees stay middle class" was a little offense. @Sclass doesn't appreciate all his advantages! But, thinking more - that's exactly what I wanted out of my home and 401k. I didn't (don't?) fully comprehend how the wealthy ...

Re: Stop 401k to pay off mortgage?

To each their own. I know long term mathematically paying my home off at the expense of 2 years lost contributions of 401k is not financially beneficial. But I want to own my home. If your fine paying monthly for the bank to own your home that’s your prerogative but mine is ownership. I don’t want ...

Re: living out of my office in pursuit of ERE

Hats off to you. I had a fellow student who did this in grad school. We practically lived in our labs so it made sense. He had a van and he parked it in a big parking lot at Stanford. They used to let RV people park there overnight so it fit in. This was 25 years ago. Now I imagine they wouldn’t get...

Re: Older parents and living arrangements

Elder care is much harder to nail down how long you would remain in the role. Hey this reminded me of something really important. It probably is very relevant to @unempolyable’s situation. I took control because I realized the money might not last if it was managed poorly. My siblings are good at s...

Re: Older parents and living arrangements

I would not discount your ability to care for your mom with the guidance of your RN sister or her primary care physician. A majority of later care is just being the brains of the operation by keeping detailed notes and making sure she makes doctors appointments, med schedules, exercise, walgreens r...

Re: Elite Overproduction/Underproduction

People seem okay with elite basketball players being much better at basketball. They're generally not okay with elite business executives being much better at solving business problems than others. Before we run off trying to figure out why this is true I think it’s truth needs to be qualified a bi...

Re: Elite Overproduction/Underproduction

Hey thanks for posting this. Very interesting. Some of the comparisons need some imagination. I think the middle class in the gilded age and czarist Russia were a lot worse off than middle class people in the US for example today. Millionaires were a lot harder to mint thirty years ago simply due to...

Re: Money anxiety

I love the arrow analogy. It reminds me of a close relationship I had in my youth. My girlfriend had been regularly raped by her dad. The closer we got the more she destabilized us. It was insurmountable together. Now I have this image in my mind of clumsily driving old arrows into her. Haunting ima...

Wow, I think this might just help me. It rings true. I’ve avoided therapy and ignored requests that I get some for years. I think you just saved me a few thousand in counseling bills. Thanks. I think I’m going to do some soul searching today in light of this.

Re: Money anxiety

More money helped mine go away. Of course I have anxiety over investment losses, inflation, diminishing returns and tax audits. But I’ll take that over the older worries like not eating. Or not being in my boss’s good graces. Age helped. I outgrew a lot of that anxiousness stuff. But I lost my youth...

Re: Programming Jobs that are not "Puzzle Solving?"

Yeah documenting. I have a bunch of friends who passed through Google over the years. Their job was documenting and cleaning up spaghetti code that was in use but unmodified the moment it worked. Really mind numbing stuff like going through and renaming variables and commenting other people’s code. ...

The fact that the tires are worn out is a good sign. Sounds like the original owner got a lot of use out of it.

Re: Older parents and living arrangements

It may be wise to walk through some common scenarios like those your mother's friends encountered. What would happen if..... This. At eighty anything can happen. First, decide what role you would like to play in her endgame. This is not a discussion. It is a decision you need to make alone. Not wit...

Re: Fixit Log

95 F or C? I guess either would be bad. Something is wrong. Taking out the drum isn’t hard on most machines. You need to open the back and slip the belt off. Make sure to unplug it first. I took my moms entire dryer apart to move it into the basement. My recollection was the drum came out easily. I ...
