Re: Rust stain remover for house paint?

Tried the potato lemon salt. Didn’t work. I got some out but I think that was mostly from the scrubbing action removing the top layer of paint. Smells good outside my window now. Apparently my wife has some CLR she got for the toilet. She told me after she called a painting contractor to just paint...

Re: Downsizing Obstacle - Crossing the Class Barrier

@Sclass - the unicorn house in a good neighborhood sounds great. I don't understand though - why would they sell to you below market? How does that avoid upscale carrying costs like property taxes or insurance? My original strategy included trying to buy a distressed property with cash during the w...

Rust stain remover for house paint?

I have some rust stains from water dripping over rusty nails along an exterior wall at my place. I’d like to clean off the rust stains and keep the paint on the stucco. I’ve tried vinegar, dish detergent and backing soda with a brush. Vinegar worked best but it didn’t get it totally clean. The iron ...

Re: Downsizing Obstacle - Crossing the Class Barrier

Some random thoughts. I’ve always run into this problem when I try to blanket search an area by cost. Cheap housing attracts people who cannot pay for expensive housing. Not won’t pay, cannot pay. There is a big difference. Anyhow, the way I’ve gotten around it is I look for a sweetheart deal in a g...

Re: Wayfinding: The Science and Mystery of How Humans Navigate the World

Daylen you bring up a good point. I’m not a big fan of games and it’s commonly warned that they remap the brain. But I’m sure there are some areas like those you mention where your brain can be strengthened especially given the repetition of gaming. I can barely remember the last time I was hopeless...

Re: FreedomPop

So my iPhone 4s phones still work. You can make a call. Send a text. Use the gps. Read email. Settle an argument with Wikipedia. They are from 2012. I bought them in 2015. Roughly. Some key apps like Chase banking stopped working in 2018. The older version of Safari wouldn’t show modern websites. Th...

Re: Wayfinding: The Science and Mystery of How Humans Navigate the World

I revisited two point triangulation this week with some friends. I told a story of how I once got hopelessly lost in the Urals and used a map and Suunto compass to triangulate off a radio antenna and a monument to Lenin. I couldn’t read Cyrillic so signs were meaningless. Some GPS dependent youngste...

Re: Fixit Log

I’m not sure phones have that much of an environmental cost, compared to running a car, flying, eating beef, owning too much house. I want to extract as much value as possible from mine whilst minimising costs but I don’t feel particularly guilty about owning it. I don’t have a good idea either. It...

Re: Fixit Log

I’ve recently had to upgrade my iphones. A number of things like moving from CDMA to GSM and also the power consumption on my iPhone 4s handsets drove me to the iPhone 6s. The hardware has been quite good. It’s the software that seems to get outdated. My iOS 9 Safari won’t even show modern website c...

Re: Something From Nothing Log

Hey Ego, No direct experience. I’ve often wondered what keeps people from stealing the ones I see on the streets of LA and cannibalizing them for parts. I wouldn’t want one that was dunked...for the same reasons I’d leave a phone or car with water damage. So the scooter will have a lithium battery. ...

Re: Motor, belt, and pulley questions

I just went through this for my custom truck AC. I picked my belt from this table. https://www.gates.com/us/en/power-transmission/v-belts/fractional-horsepower/truflex-v-belts/p/8400-000000-000000 Probably the ones C40 worked on. The critical parameters were the belt cross section. I picked the 0.5”...

Re: My Mechanics Place

Sclass, I wonder if the high spending on cars isn't driven by families with multiple cars? Is that $38K the average price of the average American's vehicle, or the average total cost of vehicles for the average family? I'm not very good overall at squeezing money out of the budget with vehicles. I ...

I noticed Tech Shop in the Bay Area went under during my last visit there. https://makezine.com/2017/11/15/techshop-closes-doors-files-bankruptcy/ Here is one in my area that seems to be working. https://urbanworkshop.net/ I think there are some unique challenges in running these places. Like the go...

Re: My Mechanics Place

This is really cool. Hope they spread. I’ve seen a lot of places like this come and go. The best and longest lasting ones were private. Like the 7W social capital model. A group of trusted friends. I keep seeing the public maker space model fail. I like it, but it must be difficult operating somethi...

Re: On the risk of investing in real estate for the long run

Yeah good points all around. Everyone (well almost everyone) seems to chase this state or permanence. After hitting estate sales this morning I can tell you it’s a fool’s errand. Yet people want it and idealize it. I’ll have to watch the video. Sounds like an interesting thought about learning then ...

2. Costco's "environmentally responsible" liquid dish soap makes a cheap and wonderful shampoo. Random off-the-wall discovery. It's now my favorite. 8. Laundromats have mysteriously not improved since I was in college back in '92. Technology has completely left them behind. Is this because the peop...

Re: $$$ for your firearms

I wish there were more, and easier, $$$ for gun programs. When you inherit multiple unregistered firearms from your relatives, but you don't run in the gun community, know no dealers, and are unfamiliar with your state/local carrying and transportation laws, unloading unwanted firearms is a giant p...
