Re: SV Red Baron

Survived a medical emergency and two hurricanes. This post discusses maintenance & repairs, upgrades, and sailing.

Medical Emergency: I previously discussed my medical problem in a separate post. It occurred to me that if I had been in a remote region then I would have been a goner, so I have been ...

DIY Medicine

I recently sustained a medical emergency that required me to contact the EMTs who took me to the hospital. Recently, I received the bill of nearly $90K; my health insurance is covering most of it, but I am liable for the deductible and out of pocket maximum which will be paid through my Health ...

Re: Is a men following the ERE Lifestyle More Attractive?

You know, there is a reason why I decided to delete that post. I thought it was not really necessary to address those points.

I am not sure whether you are agreeing or disagreeing with me.

As far as the forever free man, that would require having a working crystal ball. It is well known that a ...

Re: Is a men following the ERE Lifestyle More Attractive?

This idea may be worth exploring to gain a better understanding of how the ERE lifestyle affects a person's social market value (SMV).

Five pages have been spent discussing this topic. Is there a consensus?

The fundamental question is “what do women want in a man?”

I would say that what they ...

Re: ERE or Semi-ERE past Age 65

What, exactly, is ridiculous when you yourself identified triggers for getting outside help in your own family?

Below is ridiculous.

Family is a bad solution…

ERE ethos is about using all the capital that is available. Financial capital is the resource to use when you don't have other ...

No need to feel sorry. It is part of the great circle of life. Perhaps, I could have been more diplomatic in my sentiments. It was not my intention to hurt your feelings.

Re: ERE or Semi-ERE past Age 65

Family is a bad solution, as you are now putting a continual, every day burden on them, or it gets put in the portfolio of family members too disorganized to do their own shit routinely.

This is ridiculous.

ERE ethos is about using all the capital that is available and only using financial ...

Re: The eldercare thread

It's my understanding that cognitive decline can be postponed for a long time by learning and maintaining systems and habits.

This is a coping mechanism, not a means to delay cognitive decline.

There is some evidence to suggest that keeping your brain active delays the onset and progression of ...

Re: The eldercare thread

I'm wondering whether we, the non-old, too often let the elderly get away with age-based excuses that really has more to do with their lack of effort or interest.

Remember, this thread is not about the generic old, but those experiencing cognitive decline.

My mother cannot operate the phone ...

My mother is also experiencing cognitive decline. Until recently I was helping her. She cannot live alone. My sister has now taken over.

What specifically are you trying to address?

Re: Funding nursing home for parents

A nursing home (in the USA) has skilled nursing care 24/7. I am unclear what is meant by a care home.

If all you need is custodial care, then a nursing home would be overkill.

If the scope of your need is custodial care, then have you considered a DIY approach? The parents' assets and income ...

Re: Nausea from Virtual Reality

If VR renders the experience (at least the interesting sights and sounds of it) common, then traveling for real is merely paying a lot to experience crowds and travel diarrhea.

Its the difference between seeing the Superbowl on TV or seeing it in person in the stadium. Being at Times Square on ...

Why a boat nearly 40 years old? Originally, my search focus was on “newish” production boats. However, I have since come to the realization that modern boats have been unduly influenced by the needs of the charter boat market. For my stated mission I came to believe that an older boat would best fit ...

My first day of retirement was 1 Jan 2017 and things have been going well. My original retirement plan was to undertake a round-the-world trip ...
