Re: Car Strategy

I strategically arranged my life to where I did not need a car. I used public transit. You are in the UK. Isn't public transit supposed to be excellent? My experience was in Los Angeles.

Re: Would you invest in the individual stocks in an index fund?

You should expand to a world fund. The USA represents about 50% of world total stock market capitalization. Vanguard has an index fund for it. They also have an index fund for World ex USA.

Re: Trump's Space Force

Back in the old days, the Air Force element (i.e. aircraft) were contained within the Army (Army Air Corps) and the Navy (Naval Aviation). The Army Air Corps eventually became the Air Force. As far as the Naval Aviation I am uncertain if any elements (i.e. land based aircraft) were transferred over ...

Re: Tax “Penalty” Question

You don't have to manually send in a check for quarterly tax payments. It can be automated through the EFTPS (Electronic Federal Tax Payment System, https://www.eftps.gov).

Re: Letting go of Tracking Every Expense

Tracking expenses is done automatically with minimal effort on my part. Virtually every payment is done by credit card or check. Tracking is done by Personal Capital (in the past by Yodlee). Sometimes I have to reclassify a transaction. These days I don't pay close attention to the expenses.

Re: Fidelity ZERO expense index fund

Vanguard 0.04% is for a consumer Admiral fund ($10K minimum balance). Institutional investors can buy at a much lower expense ratio. As IlliniDave states it is likely a "loss leader" and a relatively minor one given the alternatives available to generate customers - namely advertising. Schwab does i...

Re: Do you have bonds in your portfolio?

For bonds I use CDs - both bank and brokered. I use them for liability matching purposes. When I was planning my early retirement I built a CD ladder to cover the time between my planned retirement date and the start of my pension. As it turned out since I became redundant my pension started immedia...

Re: Millenials - we're kind of screwed as a generation. What to do what to do~

I don't even need the money to survive, I just want to make me usefull. The height of madness is to keep doing the same thing over and over again and failing. Obviously, you need to do something different. If you don't need the money, then why are you looking for a job? Stop looking for a job, star...

Re: Patreon users

I use Patreon to support YouTube creators. I think it works well. For those who are using it, has it been the impression that it's helped up? In my experience (my now defunct tip-jar) only a tiny minority of "subscribers" actually contribute anything, so ... I wonder how much of a solution this is? ...

Re: Should I sign a two year contract with my current employer?

You've received an offer. Now, it is your turn to make a counter offer or refuse. For me, if I planned to stay, I would research the market to identify an appropriate amount for a counter offer. If you think that is 90K then go for it.

Re: Fox's Journey: Out of the Burrow

The general rule of thumb is that advanced degrees are on someone else's dime. If you have to pay for it, then you are doing something wrong. THF has a degree from Amherst. He should be able to get an entry-level job based on that degree and get his employer to foot the bill for an advanced degree.
