Re: Fixit Log

Good reminder about the respirator. I pretty sure asbestos in brakes didn’t improve my father’s health.

Re: Fixit Log

There are three generations of drivers, three dwellings, and four cars (actually five my mom had this POS truck she never drives.) I am in the middle generation. The most mechanically inclined is someone I gave birth too, but now a fledging adult. Oldest generation has the best in tools (my late fat...

Re: Fixit Log

The NAPA store is half a mile. Should I drive my 3/4 ton pickup? My bigger issue is how to safely jack it up. There is a bottle jack and some sketchy home-welded floor jacks at my mom’s house. Not sure I want to invest in more expensive equipment. Definitely don’t want the end of my story to b...

Thinking about replacing the front brakes on the Prius as a diy activity.

Watch the utube looks pretty straight forward.

Re: Something From Nothing Log

When I was in college I tried to collect enough cans while walking across the dorm parking lot to the 7-11 to buy myself a Sunday paper. More than once I found unopened packages of beer.

I have also found random gift cards too.

Re: My parents announce TARP for siblings

ok, your best outcome seems to be to be out of a job drunk on your ass all day, well, i'm not bankrolling that" but on the whole, as long as you've been a minimally decent parent, that shouldn't really arise. I would be careful to attribute that to parenting. As someone with addiction in the fa...

Re: My parents announce TARP for siblings

I had a situation where I was looking for parental approval I wasn’t getting. Ends up it was sort of a situational problem. DH and I had made some big changes and were expecting support and got jealousy and negative judgments. My mom was trying to run my life and I suspect she thought I was trying t...

Using 2020 which is a huge outlier in terms of both spending (lower than normal) and unemployment insurance funding (usually zero). We were: Portfolio greater than 1 Laura work. .20 Farmer Boy work. .20 Laura UI. .25 Farmer Boy UI. .42 Interest. .01 Stimulus. .13 Total over 2.20, but .80 is basicall...

Re: xNTJ vs. xNTP Roles

You know what all NTs seem have in common? Caring an awful lot about MBTI types. Maybe the need to sit through k12 in-services with a bunch of elementary teachers that are mostly ESFP’s. If you sit in the back with the school psychologists which lean to ?NTP but ironically often are paid to judge. ...

Re: Lending out Crypto or how to generate other income streams?

Ego you are right. What I find weird is not that the OP continues to HODLE but that a tax free way to the exit (some)is right there. I suspect it is at high risk to be legislated away. I think it’s like monoculture farming. The OP wants to quit farming and rent out the land. Maybe that’s fine but ma...

Re: Obtaining a Second Passport

Costa Rica has a new nomad visa that is a path to citizenship. They want digital nomads but don’t want people making border runs to Nicaragua. What I couldn’t quite figure out from the information was if you needed to work period or if you just needed to convert $60k to colones and put it in a Costa...

Re: Lending out Crypto or how to generate other income streams?

I think a bit more info would be useful. Where do you reside and pay taxes? How old roughy are you, spouse, and offspring? Any non crypto assets? Social security at some point? What you have accumulated should last the rest of your life with a burn rate of <$5k a month. OTOH keeping it all crypto pe...

Re: Laura Ingalls starts a journal

Spring has sprung. Though later this week we might be back to winter :x Trying to walk more and eat more mindfully. Been reading Thich Nhat Hanh books. His books are repetitive and deceptively simple. I still am learning plenty though. At this rate my atheist spouse is going to be married to a Chris...

Re: College/Savings for Kids (US)

The current version of the FAFSA rules is you use the parent providing the most support (period). I think thinking much about it this yearly in the game is semi-fruitless. College funding is going to change in next 15-20 years. How exactly I refuse to make any wild guesses.

I have both read the book and watched the movie. I also spent a summer as a volunteer at an Army Corp rec area. I think both overemphasis the broke people. People ran the spectrum, but the most typical set up was a newish 40 ft slide out with a washer towed by a one ton Dodge diesel pick-up. It coul...

Re: Family Fortunes: How to Build Wealth and Hold on to It for 100 Years; Bill Bonner

As the spouse of someone with ag land in his family that dates back to the 1860’s and the actual homestead act, the homestead is not some fantastical tool of resilience and wealth making or keeping. Instead it is a something to be fetishized by the oldest generation and something for the younger gen...
