Re: Home free?

We have thought about it too. Our youngest loves to travel but would be hard to home school. DH would be competent to teach him the rules of tennis, but I he rest of his schedule would be out of our league. We have the rest of the 2021-2022 school year and the 2022-2023 to contend with. I tend to th...

Re: Investosis

@Wharnock Not sure I think many day traders have an investor mindset. More of a gambler mindset. @Ego I see people daily trying to spend themselves out of problems that aren’t financial in nature. I also think people think they need money when they really need something else somewhere on the Maslow ...

Re: "Wear it out" promise

What happens if you send in an odd number? Loss is specifically excluded on the darn tough warranty. If I buy high end socks (smart wool or darn tough) I typically buy two of the exact same pair. I had two pairs of smart wool socks I bought early on 2013 after the house fire. I have tossed two of t...

Re: Cadence of Withdrawals when retired

I feel like it has been a complicated dance between tax optimization, financial aid optimization, and health care optimization. 2020 was not a FAFSA year (although we really didn’t know that til it was nearly over). We also took out about 8 months spending as a Covid related penalty free dispersemen...

Re: "Wear it out" promise

@ego We have a saying around here that if you wear out your tent or your clothesline you are living right. You also sent me down a rabbit whole of looking at Dyeeema bags and Triple Aught Designs (definitely a brand to keep my eyes open for while thrifting). DH has a pair of Darn Tough socks that ha...

Re: Foraging Log

@western red cedar

My husband has tried dove hunting a couple times, always ends up with foraged apples and no doves. The apples are much more versatile

Fantastic views thanks for sharing your pic.

I found and ate a big batch of chicken in the woods while camping in a nearby state park.

Fully functional. We used it when I was a kid. I never minded using it.

Re: Fixit Log

My folks had the same dryer from the mid ‘60 til ~2010. It was avocado green and nobody knew how many times my dad had fixed it. DS and my dad share the same type of mechanically inclined brain. I feel some nostalgia for the stove. It is early ‘80s vintage. It has cooked some good meals. The fridge ...

Re: Fixit Log

My son fixed the dryer in his apartment. He bought installed a new timer switch and knob. Good as new. My fix-it fail is I just ordered a new dishwasher, range, fridge, and microwave/range hood. This dishwasher is broke and we have made numerous attempts to fix, fridge runs constantly, the oven does...

Re: Laura Ingalls starts a journal

My last month has been good. What I didn’t mention in my last post was my frustration when I got back from our West Coast trip and stepped on the scale for the first time on three weeks. I decided to try a round of whole30. As someone that has avoided formal “diets” my whole life it was definitely a...

Re: What constitutes a buy nothing year?

I am struggling with this issue in terms of healthy eating. I am on day 29 of whole30. I am feeling great. Lost weight (I have cheated and stepped on the scale). My digestive system has worked better. Longer term it is not sustainable. It eliminates perfectly healthy food. It sucks 90% of the fun of...

Re: DIY Dishwasher Detergent?

I had a concoction that was washing soda, real cascade, and something else that I found posted on the internet. It was okay and less expensive.

I have since lived in a succession of places with no dishwasher and my current on is broken with no plan to replace.

Re: Will Gas Stations Exist In 15 Years?

Sure. People buy big vehicles for safety, status and recreation. EVs will never pull a camper, be easily modified or get good MPGe ( as a heavy suburban). What is the rate of EVs for single car ownership vs second or third? Americans only kinda care about mpg/environment. There are a slew of shunne...

Re: Laura Ingalls starts a journal

DH, younger son and I just returned from two and a half week car trip to the Pacific Northwest. The longest trip we have taken since 2009. It was mostly a success and a good time. We had contemplated a vehicle upgrade or rental car prior to the trip. Ultimately, we opted not too and decided to wait ...

Re: Semi-ERE Year 3 - Wanderlust Prevails

@ego “In other words, the stuff that past-you decided to keep makes changes to future-you less indelible than a clean slate would.” I think having the life experience of a house fire has changed me (and the rest of my crew) mostly for the better. I have had a hard time articulating why/how to others...

Re: Stories and Anecdotes about Nonconsumers/howlies

Can’t speak for the rest of board but I have read the books, most of the biographies, visited most of the historic sites, and survived two winters in South Dakota. Laura was also a pioneer in the young adult category which developed in the 1930-1940 previous to that (in English anyway) there were ki...

Re: Stories and Anecdotes about Nonconsumers/howlies

@Salazor The Ingalls crew also left Burr Oak, IA in the middle of the night owing money to nearly everyone. I also think the economy was just more volatile in those days. If grasshoppers ate all the crops in Minnesota today both the Feds and the state would rush to help instead they were SOL. A hard...
