Re: What do you do for work?

I usually say— I don’t have paid employment responsibilities at the present time.

If they ask more I tell them I used to do X or Y.
X is a higher status answer
Y is more recent

I once read that in Iceland it is a rude question ask a person his/her profession. I would be down with that.

@Jacob
My past six month daily average is 12,3xx. It is pretty steady and contains a fair bit of walking on sand. I haven’t been a desk job person for a long time.

Re: The camino

We have been hiking with our packs and gear of approximate weight.

I am a bit worried. No blisters or chaffing issue. I just run out of gumption before I get to Camino like distance and elevation changes. :?

The camino

DH and I are planning on doing the Camino (Frances route).

Any helpful suggestions other than go back in time and be a few years younger?

Practicing both encourages improvement in both sets of skills and increases flexibility. Focusing too much on one makes the opposite less possible. DH and I are both happier ...

Re: Travel across America on Amtrak

DH bought the month long pass. He ended up traveling 3 weeks and using 6-7 of the segments. Iowa to Sacramento to Emeryville to LA to Tucson to San Antonio I joined him in San Antonio we rode together to Austin and flew home. I had live text messages reports the whole time and I would love a train j...

Maybe a late 90’s Astro van? They are a kind of a cult item for non fancy van people. Personally, I lived through the 70’s and 80’s and watched my dad wrenching on various old cars. And being broke down on the side of the road. It was the only times I heard him swear. Those experience turned me into...

Re: What doesn't kill you might make you dumber?

Timed intelligence is crucial though. Slower thinking means less thoughts considered per day, which means less progress (on whatever axis is relevant to the person) per day, which, over time, leads to being "stupider". Conversely, people massively succesful in an area which requires intel...

Re: What doesn't kill you might make you dumber?

Traditional individual intelligence testing loads pretty heavily on processing speed, which I suspect “brain fog” mostly is a slowing of processing, My experience testing people with severe cardiac problems is that they take much longer to administer the test to regardless of the individual’s actual...

I just learned about the Discover and Go program at our local library. Many libraries in California use it to distribute free family passes to local events, museums and some local attractions. In our city they offer tickets to some really good events including the ballet, university sports events a...

@zbigi I think you are confusing being able to do something at a high(er) Wheaten level with wanting to do everything at that level all the time. I can grind local wheat into sourdough bread. I know how and have done it in the past. It’s fun and enjoyable to me. Doesn’t mean I am going to bother wit...

I find the food thing is always a bit of a dance. More kitchen, more cooking less cooking more meals out. We carry a French press, knife, and dollar store cutting board everywhere. I find I do better at weight maintenance traveling than being more stationary mostly because we stay where the weather ...

The known belongs is key. I have been traveling with a 40 liter bag (plus some joint belongs in DH’s larger bag.) I have four pairs of socks. I had a fifth cheap pair I consciously tossed. They are my little sock friends. I know when I leave if I have them all. Two pairs of them are Darn Tough brand...

I would go back to the Baja in a heartbeat. However, I am not convinced that we would go back so soon. We flew to Cabo from CA. We mostly walked. We did two long distance bus rides on Aguila which was great (Cabo to LaPaz and LaPaz to Loreto.). We also used Uber a couple times in Cabo and LaPaz. In ...

I think using FI as a symbolic goal is actually a better way to do it than using it as a marker to indicate your freedom. As I have argued over and over again, a high earning potential, track record of high savings rate, money in the bank and a low expenditure rate or more than enough to set you fre...

Re: Laura Ingalls starts a journal

The Baja was wonderful. The weather was fantastic though the water temps were getting too cold for me at the end. I love the combo of desert and ocean together. I went to a Spanish-English conversation group in Loreto. It was fun. I later ran into one of the Gringo participants and had a nice conver...
