Re: Investors like Walter Schloss
YoungAndWise, Check out www.valueinvestorinsight.com/ It features discussions with many noted investors from whom you can learn. However, in the end, its all about the actual investing and learning about yourself through this process. How much work you put in to find and validate ideas and your ment...

Re: Which Work Path To Take?
Stick to the current career - it seems more prudent. You yourself mentioned that you can always switch later .... and even in 4 years you will still be under 35 so a career switch will not be out of the question, especially if it to a remote career.

Re: Is Your Health Noticeably Better After ERE / FI ?
Tylerrr When I had very stressful periods at work (100+ hours/wk), I tried to do the following, (some of) which you can do even in a cubicle: 1. Sleep 7 hours straight at least one night during the week and one during the weekend. 2. Climb the stairs to get to the water cooler - you do this 4-6 time...

Re: SkaraBrae's Journal
SkaraBrae Really cool progress. Stick with the envelopes - it is well worth it because it forces you to think ahead and understand that cash is finite! One thing I do with DW is use an application on our phones called toshl - here is their website: https://toshl.com/ We are cheap so we use their bas...

Kangei watanabe! I too left the academic track to get an MBA and today I own my own company, so I am intrigued by your story :) WHat are your goals now that you do not need to work? WIll you close the business or sell it? As for the Yen depreciating - the danger lies mainly if you intend to travel a...

SW I feel your dilemma and I am happy the thread is so active. A few random thoughts: * As for the house, have you thought about FSBO-ing it? That alone will save you a good chunk of money. * Use the time at work to study languages - perhaps you can leverage your govt job to go do some govt overseas...

Re: Who are your heroes?
There are so many - the trick is to think about one of them each day and imagine how you can be a little bit more like them, but off the top of my head here are three: Victor Hugo - read his preface to Les Miserables; Mikahil Bulgakin - for his courage to write The Master & Margarita in 1930's S...

Re: Reducing exposure to risk after ERE?
There is a risk that the bonds will default, no matter which government, so having everything in one basket strikes me as far more dangerous ... also, the 3-4% SWR may be almost immune to a 50% market crash - e.g. you invest in dividend paying stocks of large corporations, most of which did not stop...

George the Original One, thanks for bumping the thread, it made me finally sit down and do the math :) 2/2014 Retire in home country - 9.6% [I am shocked that in theory, even without gaining on my capital I can avoid working for almost 10 years .....] Retire in DW's home country - 5.9% Given our sav...

Re: How to Stop Taking Long Hot Showers?
Move to Russia - life is far cheaper, the women are awesome and there is central heating which means you have hot water on demand 24/7 for about 50 weeks of the year (there is a 2 week maintenance period).

Re: KD's Journal (Alaska)
KD Do you really want to live in your office? I did this years ago for about 3 months and although my boss was very understanding at first, it eventually caused issues ... also, what social life could you keep in the office? Would it not be better to rent a room? I'd look to live with an older coupl...
